Cho Closes the First Symposium: 'The Seed Is Planted'
Kim Doo-hwan, with Master Cho Han-kyu and Dr. Hoon Park, Konkuk University (professor; MC of the symposium; adviser to the KOICA master's students who ran the Paju trials) · South Korea
The closing of the symposium. Prof. Kim Doo-hwan sums up the day's 23 talks: foreign graduate students who first met natural farming in March 2016 studied it at Konkuk, practiced it on the Paju farm, ran trials and presented them. He calls on everyone to spread it worldwide and hopes for a second and third symposium. Master Cho promises to back the movement with the years he has left: 'This is the beginning. The seed has been planted.' A Taiwanese Atayal couple sings, and the day ends with a slogan for love shouted in many languages.
What they found
Main claim: natural farming is only just starting to spread worldwide; a first group of foreign students learned it in one season at Konkuk, and everyone present must now carry it home, because Master Cho cannot do it alone.
Closing session of the 1st International Symposium of Natural Science Farming, Konkuk University, Seoul, October 5, 2016. Prof. Kim Doo-hwan spoke in English and Korean; Dr. Hoon Park (introduced as 'Director Park') interpreted the Korean into English; Master Cho Han-kyu spoke briefly in Korean. No slides. No data were presented; the trial results are in the students' own talks.
-
23 presentations were given at the symposium
Kim contrasts this with the past, when each country held its own symposiums or workshops; here many countries met in one place.

The Paju trials: foreign master's students who first learned natural farming in March 2016 ran trials on a range of crops at Konkuk's Paju farm
Kim says that since March he taught natural farming hands-on in Paju with the graduate students, on various crops. They studied at the university and drove about an hour and a half to the farm to practice; they ran the trials, wrote papers and presented them that day. Crops, plot sizes and methods are in the individual talks, not here.

Kim says the students succeeded in their first year and gained confidence to farm this way at home
By learning theory and practice together and discussing as a group. No measure of 'success' is given in this session.

A farmer from Kenya came to Korea for natural farming training
He is not a student but a farmer working with a missionary; he sat in on the academic sessions. The Korean description of him is only partly captured.

-
The mission is to spread natural farming in every country, by everyone together
Kim: this is impossible for 'our Director Cho Han-kyu alone, or for just a few of us'; all present must join forces. The interpreter adds that from 2016 a 'big movement' of Korean Natural Farming will spread worldwide.

Plan: further symposiums, a second and a third, expected to grow
Kim: 'Being the first, it is very small,' but he believes and hopes the second and third will grow far greater. No date or place for the next one is given.

Master Cho pledges to support the movement for the rest of his life
'I don't know how many years I have left, but I will do my best to back this up. This is the beginning. Now the seed has been planted.' He asks the room to raise natural farming 'with the fertilizer of your love' until everyone in the global village lives happily.

Konkuk's Global Agricultural Development and Cooperation Center ran the event
Kim thanks its team, an international team, which held two international conferences, 'today and yesterday'.

- A ceremony, not a research talk: no data, no slides; claims of the students' 'success' are the organizer's view.
- Kim's Korean was interpreted live into English; the two do not always match (e.g. at 311 s the Korean says the students succeeded, the English says the symposium succeeded).
- Several Korean and English passages fell between the machine transcripts' segments and are missing from the transcript (e.g. the Korean description of the Kenyan farmer, about 375 s).
- Dr. Park is named only as 'Director Park' (박 원장님); the English name was not clearly caught.
- Students with no natural farming background learned it in one season (March to October) and ran their own trials; the method can be taught fast when theory and field practice go together.
- The organizers saw 2016 as the starting point of a worldwide spread, and asked each participant to teach it at home rather than wait for Master Cho.
- Master Cho framed the work as a seed just planted, to be raised with care and love.

Spread it worldwide by working together and showing results In a 2017 seminar Cho's team says natural farming will spread across the globe if people work hard, show tangible results and help one another; the closing makes the same call.

'The fertilizer of love' Cho teaches that everything stems from love and that natural farming must not abandon this principle; his closing image of raising the movement with love fits his own teaching.

0:00 Thank you so much. It's been a long day, but it was so amazing and a very joyful day today. I'm not going to present anything. I'm just going to finish up the symposium today. So I'd like to invite Master Cho here and then Dr. Park, to finish up today's symposium. Now, at the end of today, we invite the Director [Master Cho] and Director Park to the stage, and with their closing words we will bring our symposium to an end.
1:14 Today there were 23 presentations. In the past, each country held its own symposiums, workshops or conferences. Today, in a sense, we came from many countries and held one symposium together. Today we saw how natural farming is going successfully in countries all over the world.
2:19 Until now it has not yet spread to many countries of the world. So far not many countries have been spread this news, new information, as yet. But looking at it now, in 2016, many countries around the world are just about to start natural farming. [Interpreter, in English: "I think we are at the very starting point. From now on, 2016, we're going to have a big movement of this Korean Natural Farming throughout the whole world."] If the whole world takes up natural farming and finds it hard and fussy and makes many mistakes, it will take a very long time.
3:08 Since March this year, here in Paju, Korea, I have been teaching natural farming hands-on with our graduate students, on a range of crops, and they wrote papers, ran the trials, and presented them today. We have practiced this Korean Natural Farming in Paju, Korea, with graduate students of many different countries,
3:54 and we have tried to accumulate information to present for today. Most of these graduate students who came from abroad first learned natural farming from March, and then practiced it. While studying at the university they learned natural farming, and they went about an hour and a half from here to practice it.
4:40 ...about one and a half hours' distance by driving, and then they practice natural farming there. I think this is the first time we have an international symposium, but this is a great opportunity to learn what real natural farming needs. Even though these students only started this year, they succeeded with natural farming. So these students farmed in Paju,
5:27 so that they could learn theory and practice at the same time, and by discussing it together, they have now gained some confidence that they can do natural farming when they go back to their own countries. And now one person from Kenya has also come to receive natural farming training. Now, one of us from Kenya is here to receive training in natural farming.
6:25 He is not a student, ...the missionary farmer. So he joined this theoretical, or the academic, session, but he's just one of the farmers working for the missionary. Most of you here know natural farming well and are already doing it to some degree. Our mission is not only to practice natural farming ourselves, but to join forces and spread it in our own countries and across the world.
7:21 This task, this mission, is simply impossible for our Director Cho Han-kyu alone, or for just a few of us. So, to carry this mission, I believe all of us gathered here today must join forces to spread natural farming across the world and the earth, and make it a truly good place to live. I think we have to put our own effort together, every one of us put it together, to spread this new natural farming movement throughout the whole world.
8:31 As the Director said today, this is the first international symposium. Being the first, it is very small, but I believe and hope that with the second and third, this symposium will grow far greater. I think today is the small to start, but as time goes on, we're going to have a very strong and large scale of this information to share. Thank you very much. [Master Cho:] Every step you have taken will become a tremendous driving force for bringing this earth back to life. I don't know how many years I have left,
9:19 but I will do my best to back this up. This is the beginning. Now the seed has been planted. This is the beginning. We just plant the seed now.
10:06 With the fertilizer of your love, raise this natural farming, until the day everyone in the global village lives happily. Freedom! We have to spread the fertilizer of love to grow this one big enough to save this world. Thank you very much! So, right now, we have a special performance from Taiwan.
11:37 Hello everyone. We are from Taiwan. Apparently this couple have some special performance for you. He just introduced that we are from Tayal. This couple is from Taiwan, the original people. 12:23 And they're going to perform a combination of their tribe's harmony song, all put together. We are very grateful that Professor Zhao came to Taiwan to teach us natural agriculture, especially since he has a great responsibility for the people of Taiwan. I want to offer a special thanks to Master Cho for his special love for Taiwan, to the people.
13:11 This song means that we are all family. We all can remember. (song) Where is my hometown? Where is your hometown? In the past we were one family, and now we are still one family.
