Cho Closes the First Symposium: 'The Seed Is Planted'

Kim Doo-hwan, with Master Cho Han-kyu and Dr. Hoon Park, Konkuk University (professor; MC of the symposium; adviser to the KOICA master's students who ran the Paju trials) · South Korea

The closing of the symposium. Prof. Kim Doo-hwan sums up the day's 23 talks: foreign graduate students who first met natural farming in March 2016 studied it at Konkuk, practiced it on the Paju farm, ran trials and presented them. He calls on everyone to spread it worldwide and hopes for a second and third symposium. Master Cho promises to back the movement with the years he has left: 'This is the beginning. The seed has been planted.' A Taiwanese Atayal couple sings, and the day ends with a slogan for love shouted in many languages.

What they found

The question

Main claim: natural farming is only just starting to spread worldwide; a first group of foreign students learned it in one season at Konkuk, and everyone present must now carry it home, because Master Cho cannot do it alone.

How they tested it

Closing session of the 1st International Symposium of Natural Science Farming, Konkuk University, Seoul, October 5, 2016. Prof. Kim Doo-hwan spoke in English and Korean; Dr. Hoon Park (introduced as 'Director Park') interpreted the Korean into English; Master Cho Han-kyu spoke briefly in Korean. No slides. No data were presented; the trial results are in the students' own talks.

Results
  1. 23 presentations were given at the symposium

Kim contrasts this with the past, when each country held its own symposiums or workshops; here many countries met in one place.

  2. The Paju trials: foreign master's students who first learned natural farming in March 2016 ran trials on a range of crops at Konkuk's Paju farm

Kim says that since March he taught natural farming hands-on in Paju with the graduate students, on various crops. They studied at the university and drove about an hour and a half to the farm to practice; they ran the trials, wrote papers and presented them that day. Crops, plot sizes and methods are in the individual talks, not here.

  3. Kim says the students succeeded in their first year and gained confidence to farm this way at home

By learning theory and practice together and discussing as a group. No measure of 'success' is given in this session.

  4. A farmer from Kenya came to Korea for natural farming training

He is not a student but a farmer working with a missionary; he sat in on the academic sessions. The Korean description of him is only partly captured.

  5. The mission is to spread natural farming in every country, by everyone together

Kim: this is impossible for 'our Director Cho Han-kyu alone, or for just a few of us'; all present must join forces. The interpreter adds that from 2016 a 'big movement' of Korean Natural Farming will spread worldwide.

  6. Plan: further symposiums, a second and a third, expected to grow

Kim: 'Being the first, it is very small,' but he believes and hopes the second and third will grow far greater. No date or place for the next one is given.

  7. Master Cho pledges to support the movement for the rest of his life

'I don't know how many years I have left, but I will do my best to back this up. This is the beginning. Now the seed has been planted.' He asks the room to raise natural farming 'with the fertilizer of your love' until everyone in the global village lives happily.

  8. Konkuk's Global Agricultural Development and Cooperation Center ran the event

Kim thanks its team, an international team, which held two international conferences, 'today and yesterday'.

Hold it loosely
  • A ceremony, not a research talk: no data, no slides; claims of the students' 'success' are the organizer's view.
  • Kim's Korean was interpreted live into English; the two do not always match (e.g. at 311 s the Korean says the students succeeded, the English says the symposium succeeded).
  • Several Korean and English passages fell between the machine transcripts' segments and are missing from the transcript (e.g. the Korean description of the Kenyan farmer, about 375 s).
  • Dr. Park is named only as 'Director Park' (박 원장님); the English name was not clearly caught.
For your farm
  • Students with no natural farming background learned it in one season (March to October) and ran their own trials; the method can be taught fast when theory and field practice go together.
  • The organizers saw 2016 as the starting point of a worldwide spread, and asked each participant to teach it at home rather than wait for Master Cho.
  • Master Cho framed the work as a seed just planted, to be raised with care and love.

Next to Master Cho's teaching

  • Agrees

Spread it worldwide by working together and showing results In a 2017 seminar Cho's team says natural farming will spread across the globe if people work hard, show tangible results and help one another; the closing makes the same call.

  • Agrees

'The fertilizer of love' Cho teaches that everything stems from love and that natural farming must not abandon this principle; his closing image of raising the movement with love fits his own teaching.
