Chicken Waterer Pipe Sizes, Feeder Boxes, IMO in Worm Bins

Drake opens with a package from a viewer called the Goofman: candles, hemp wicks, and a 3D-printed lithophane of the photo of Drake and Master Cho. He also warns that hydrated lime in mortar mix burned his hands raw after eight hours without gloves — wear gloves the whole time, and if you're exposed, rinse with vinegar then soap.

Pedro is teaching KNF classes in Brazil, covering IMO3, OHN (KNF medicine), lactobacillus, and water-soluble calcium made from charred eggs and bones. Postup Media's Joel sent an update from his garden in Panama. Joe Peduzzi wrote in that nothing grew on his property before KNF; now he runs seven IMO collections from nearby nature preserves and makes all his own solutions. Drake also plugs his friend Kapila's new Hawaiian Island Tree Service channel, notes that amino acids and fuel can be made from any living organism (sugar plus protein), and warns against adding IMO to a worm bin — it dries the bin out and stresses composting worms, so use KNF protectors (lactobacillus) there instead.

Back in the Master Cho slide presentation, Drake covers the layer chicken watering pipe: start with 1.5-inch PVC, move to 2-inch, then 4-inch as birds mature, with holes drilled slightly off-center and angled away from the chicken so water doesn't wet its chest and cause pneumonia. He then covers feeder boxes — small triangle boxes that get flipped around after about a week, and V-shaped feeders with a spinning rolly bar on top so chickens can't roost or defecate in their own food. He also covers giving chickens access to a natural dirt floor for sand bathing, which keeps skin and feathers healthy.

Drake closes with a reminder that November 2023 on-farm classes are mostly full but January 2024 still has openings at knffarm.com.

Questions answered

  • 12:31 What happened working with mortar mix without gloves the whole time? — Hydrated lime in mortar mix burned Drake's hands raw; wear gloves the whole time, and rinse with vinegar then soap if exposed.
  • 16:18 What is Pedro teaching in his KNF classes in Brazil? — IMO3, OHN (KNF medicine), lactobacillus solutions, and water-soluble calcium from charred eggs and bones.
  • 22:53 What changed on Joe Peduzzi's property after he started KNF? — Nothing would grow before; now he runs seven IMO collections from nearby nature preserves and makes all his own solutions.
  • 35:35 Can two dead rats fermented in sugar for a year make good fuel? — Yes — amino acids come from any living organism combining sugar and protein, so it works as fuel.
  • 36:19 Do worms and IMO compete or work together under a mulch layer? — Don't put IMO in a worm bin — it dries the bin out and stresses composting worms; use KNF protectors (lactobacillus) there instead.
  • 47:28 What pipe sizes and hole placement work for a KNF layer chicken waterer? — Start with 1.5-inch PVC, move to 2-inch, then 4-inch as chickens grow, with holes drilled off-center and angled away from the bird to prevent pneumonia.
  • 56:00 What are the dimensions for KNF chicken feeder boxes? — Small triangle boxes flip around after about a week; medium and large V-shaped feeders add a spinning rolly bar so chickens can't roost or defecate in their food.
  • 1:01:34 Why do chickens need sand bath access? — A natural dirt floor full of living IMOs lets chickens dust bathe, which keeps their skin and feathers healthy.
  • 1:03:30 When are the next on-farm KNF classes? — November 2023 is mostly booked; January 2024 still has openings at knffarm.com.
