JMS Microbe Recipe, IMO Harvest Timing, Pig Butchering

Drake recaps his second winter KNF teacher training, including a field trip with 83-year-old Dr. Park to Kohala. Students included Dan, learning KNF solutions for coffee leaf rust on the Kona side, Eric, and Monique, Jenny, and Bonds from the Native American Youth Association in Portland, who work on returning people to "first foods" and taught Drake about medicinal salts and smoked salt.

He shows off the class's best IMO collection, explaining how to check readiness by feel: a cold box means it isn't ready, a warm box (over 100 degrees) means microbial activity has peaked and it's time to harvest into sugar right away.

Drake then walks through Jadam Microbial Solution, which he calls "disgustingly cheap microbes": blend 5 gallons of water, about 1 cup of rich indigenous soil, 5 tablespoons of salt, and cooked potato starch, then ferment 24 to 72 hours. Bubble rings pulling away from the edge and a sweet or sour smell mean it's ready; a stinky smell means fertilizer microbes have taken over. Dilute at least 1 to 10 before applying, turning one 5-gallon batch into 50 gallons.

He also covers harvesting one of his pigs, learning porterhouse cuts from a butcher, why pigs and chickens work well in city agriculture with no smell or waste, and his ho'oponopono reconciliation with an old friend, Chris, during the Kohala trip.

Questions answered

  • 14:36 What is student Dan learning to fight coffee leaf rust? — He came from the Kona side already knowing some natural farming and leveled up his mastery of the KNF solutions, learning the why behind them, to take on coffee leaf rust.
  • 23:23 What do 'first foods' mean in indigenous nutrition work? — Monique, Jenny, and Bonds work with the Native American Youth Association in Portland teaching people to grow and eat first foods instead of relying on food deserts and processed food.
  • 26:42 Why bring pigs and chickens back into cities? — They become your waste disposal with no smell, no cleaning, and no antibiotics needed, turning garbage into what Drake calls your piggy bank.
  • 27:27 What is a porterhouse cut on a pig? — It's just a pork chop with the loin left on, something Drake learned from butcher Zach after harvesting his pig, Baby Bacon.
  • 49:09 How do you know when an IMO box is ready to harvest? — Feel the bottom of the box: cold means not ready, warm to the touch means it's over 100 degrees and microbial activity has peaked.
  • 55:25 What are the four steps of Master Cho's IMO process? — Collecting seed IMO, preserving seed IMO, propagating the microbes, then making foundation IMO, which Drake rates as expert difficulty.
  • 56:12 How do you make Jadam Microbial Solution (disgustingly cheap microbes)? — Blend 5 gallons of water, about 1 cup of rich indigenous soil, 5 tablespoons of salt, and cooked potato starch, then ferment 24 to 72 hours.
  • 58:51 How do you know when JMS is at its harvest peak? — Watch for bubble rings pulling away from the edge with a sweet or sour smell; once it turns stinky, fertilizer and putrefying microbes have taken over.
  • 1:03:25 How much do you dilute JMS before applying it? — Dilute at least 1 to 10 with water, turning one 5-gallon batch into 50 gallons of usable solution.
  • 1:04:52 Is JMS as good as Master Cho's IMO recipe? — No, JMS is a cheap fast starting point, but Master Cho's longer recipe builds stronger microbes and will get you further.
  • 1:08:23 Do you need to dangle bags of potato and soil in the bucket? — No, just blend the cooked potato and soil into the water directly instead of bagging it.
  • 38:56 What happened between Drake and Chris in Kohala? — Dr. Park brought them together on a field trip to Chris's farm, and Drake felt he had reached true ho'oponopono with him after years apart.
