OHN Frost Spray, Jadam Sulfur for Canker, Coffee Leaf Rust

Drake opens with a Pure KNF Foundation update. New members Cecily, Storm Mason, Goof, and Bird joined this month. The foundation's first monthly members meeting featured Spencer and Earl of Royal Flush Farms talking soil and rabbits. Stephen Cornett of Nature's Always Right is booked for May 2024.

Questions covered: adding soap to the maintenance formula (skip it, vinegar already cuts the surfactant effect, and 25 gallons per acre as a light mist absorbs fine on its own); fermented seawater in animal drinking water (fine, as long as it ferments clean and doesn't stink); and spraying OHN alone, diluted 1:1000, ahead of a frost, since the alcohol, cinnamon, and garlic warm plant tissue. He runs the math with ChatGPT: 25 gallons per acre works out to about 217 milliliters per 100 square feet.

Drake describes a Jadam consult at a neighbor's kava farm. Under a 10x loupe, white spotting on older kava leaves reads as powdery mildew, not whitefly, tied to monocropping and thin microbe populations. He walks through Master Cho's book recipe five for canker, black spot, pear rust, and brown blotch: Jadam wetting agent at 5 liters plus Jadam sulfur at 1.5 liters mixed into 500 liters of water, applied every seven days, or every two to three days if disease is spreading fast. For serious pepper canker, double the soap to 10 liters and push sulfur to about 2 liters.

On coffee leaf rust in Kona, Drake says sulfur knocks it back over one to two weeks of spraying every two to three days, then good IMOs rebuild plant health so rust stops being a problem. He points farmers to Dan, whom he trained on Middle Keʻei Road, plus Cole Kaʻaukai Bandera and Jason at Mele ʻĀina Farms.

Questions answered

  • 13:41 Does adding soap to the maintenance spray help it absorb better, or does calcium in the water ruin it? — Vinegar already cuts soap's surfactant effect, and a proper 25-gallon-per-acre mist absorbs well without it.
  • 16:32 Can fermented seawater be given to animals through their drinking water? — Yes, as long as it's fermented properly and doesn't smell bad.
  • 26:30 Frost is coming next week. Should I spray straight OHN diluted 1:1000 on fruit trees in the evening? — Yes, OHN alone helps before a frost because its alcohol, cinnamon, and garlic warm the plant tissue.
  • 33:24 Are the 12 free Jadam teaching videos still posted on YouTube? — Drake isn't sure, but points to his 2016 Young Sang Cho playlist and Master Cho's own 20-video series as the real source material.
  • 42:20 What's wrong with a neighbor's kava leaves showing white powdery spots? — Under a 10x loupe it looked like powdery mildew fungus, not whitefly, caused by monocropping and low microbe levels.
  • 48:12 What's the recipe for downy or powdery mildew? — Jadam wetting agent and Jadam sulfur, the soap-and-sulfur mix covered the prior week, followed up with microbes to rebuild the plant.
  • 49:43 What's the recipe for canker, black spot, pear rust, and brown blotch disease? — Jadam wetting agent at 5 liters plus Jadam sulfur at 1.5 liters mixed into 500 liters of water, applied every 7 days or every 2-3 days if spreading fast.
  • 52:03 How do you adjust the dose if pepper canker is serious? — Double the soap to 10 liters, increase sulfur to about 2 liters, and apply every two days.
  • 1:00:16 How can KNF or Jadam help with coffee leaf rust? Kona farmers are giving up organic certification over it. — Sulfur knocks it back over one to two weeks of spraying every 2-3 days, then good IMOs keep it from coming back; contact Dan on Middle Keʻei Road.
