Fix the Soil First: Soil → Crop → Animal → Human
Master Cho Han-kyu, interpreted by Kim Chang, Founder of Korean Natural Farming (Janong)
Spoken in Korean. Translated to English and checked line by line.
Cho opens the advanced seminar with questions, not recipes: what is nature, who are you, what is the biggest farming. He argues that health comes from healthy food, so the farmer is the foundation of the world, and that farming by your own judgment or a professor's theory makes 'smart fools'. He ends on the chain soil welfare, crop welfare, animal welfare, human welfare, written on the flip chart.
What they found
Why does Cho say the soil has to be fixed before anything else, people included?
Thursday morning, the first session of the three-day nutritive-cycle seminar in Makapala. The projector shows only the title slide (CGNF-H advanced training, Nutrient Cycle, October 19-21, 2017). Cho stands at a flip chart and writes in Chinese characters and Korean: 自然? He teaches by asking the room questions; the interpreter relays the answers back to him in Korean.
-
This seminar keeps the old flavour but gives a new taste; returning students should treat it as review.
Cho: eat the same food several times and it stops tasting good.
▶ 1:53 As spoken
-
To know what nature is, you first have to know who you are.
Pretending to know nature without knowing yourself 'is a lie'. Board: 自然?
▶ 3:56 As spoken
-
There is a living self and a physical self: you exist because your parents, and theirs, gave you life.
Cho's words are 생명적인 나 (the living me) and 육체적인 나 (the physical me). The interpreter said 'spirit'.
▶ 5:40 As spoken
-
The biggest farming is raising people.
Raising people is like farming.
-
Health is the biggest inheritance; lose it and you lose everything.
Board: 第一要 健康 (first need: health). Room answers before that: life, wisdom, love, respect.
-
Healthy people need healthy food, and healthy food needs healthy crops.
So the most important thing for everyone's health is healthy food, and someone has to grow it.
▶ 9:54 As spoken
-
Farming is the great foundation of the world (農者天下之大本).
Old proverb, written on the board. Reason: what guarantees the health of the child you love most is healthy food, and the farmer makes it.
-
We farm because we can't make a tomato ourselves: farming is depending on the crop.
If you could make corn, tomato, papaya or mango by magic, you wouldn't farm. Board: 依存 (dependence).
▶ 14:58 As spoken
-
Farm to suit the crop, not your own judgment.
Cho asks whether the room has farmed to the crop or to their own judgment, and whether that was smart or foolish.
▶ 15:50 As spoken
-
Professors who farm by their own theory are 'smart-fool' doctors; farmers who follow them are 'smart-fool' farmers.
Food from that farming gives 'fool's health' (바보 건강).
▶ 17:33 As spoken
-
Fix the soil first: when the soil lacks capacity, everything grown on it suffers.
'Where do you fix first, your body or your soil?' The room: soil.
▶ 22:50 As spoken
-
Soil welfare comes first, then crop welfare, then animal welfare, then human welfare.
Each has to come about before the next.
-
Today people push human welfare alone and think chemistry, working by analysis, can fix soil, crop and animal.
Board: 化學 / 分析 bracketed beside the first three.
- This page is philosophy: no recipe, rate or measurement is given.
- Cho also tells of human manure and skin disease in old Korea and of fecal-transplant capsules for colon cancer; these were not tested and we don't repeat them as advice.
- Several of Cho's Korean lines here were rebuilt from rough machine text and the interpreter's English; they are marked in the transcript.
- Start with the soil: a healthy crop, healthy animals and healthy food follow from it.
- Farm to the crop's needs, not to a theory; watch what the crop does.
- Farming matters because people's health rests on the food it grows.

Agrees
Farm by nature's way, not by human knowledge and analysis His Theory book says the academic disciplines only gather analysis results and have 'no life'. Here he says the same, joking about 'smart-fool' doctors.
Cho, Cho Han-Kyu's Natural Farming (Theory), p. 21

Agrees
Farming exists to produce food for human life and health Janong Natural Farming calls farming 'a divine labor of producing food for human life and health'. Here he reaches it through raising children and the healthy-food chain.
Cho, Janong Natural Farming (2003), p. 47
“If you don't even know who you are and act like you know nature, that's a lie.”
▶ 4:15
“I farm because I can't make it myself.”

0:00 Hello? And we have another headset here if he needs.
0:55 Everyone, it's good to meet you all again. I'm so happy to see you again. There are people from Hong Kong. I met them first time. Some have come from Hong Kong... Because of the people I've met two or three times, it feels like coming to my hometown and meeting my brothers and sisters. I've come here about two or three times now. It's like, huh? You also want that kind? Or? It's okay, right? You guys can hear me, yeah?
1:40 Yeah, so it's like, I feel like I came home. My hometown, he said. Aloha! Aloha! When you first come, it tastes good, but if you eat the same thing several times over, it can stop tasting good. So today, though it keeps some of the old flavor, I'll go toward giving you a new taste. Like if you have the same food all the time, it doesn't taste so good. So this time, this seminar, I'm gonna give you a different taste of the seminar.
2:33 Those of you who attended all of it before, take it as a review; we'll go over it once more. So if you took these classes before, this will be, right now, this will be like a review. If someone asked you what nature is, how would you answer? What is nature? Originally created. 'Originally conceived'... that God conceived it, made it. Creation. (relaying the room's answer to Cho)
3:25 If you put it that way... Then if I asked you who I am, what would you say? Okay, so if I ask you, who am I? How would you answer? They say 'energy'. 'Gi' [vital force]. (relaying the room's answer to Cho) That's what you were taught, right? Right? If you're asked what nature is: you have to know who you are before you can know what nature is. If you know yourself, what you are, then you know what nature is.
4:15 If you don't even know who you are and act like you know what nature is, that's a lie. You don't know what is yourself and then you act like you know nature. You are like a phony. [unclear] You were born someplace else and then you grew up until how you are, how you turned out to be. Right? Why? How were you born, and how is it you've lived until now?
5:03 So you were born and somehow you are living until now. If you hadn't been born of your parents, you wouldn't be here now. If you didn't have parents and weren't born, you wouldn't be here. And those parents were born because they had parents too, weren't they? But your parents, their parents, that's why you're born, through them. So you have to see it this way: there is a living [life] me, and a physical me. So if you look at it, there's a physical you and there's a spirit of you.
5:59 Understood? (literally 'Have you got it?') I understand. Understood? Understand. Understood! (the room practises the Korean reply 'arasseumnida', some getting it wrong, to laughter) Of all the things we call agriculture, what do you think is the most important agriculture? What is most important in ag business? Feeding people...
6:51 [...] the biggest one — big. Big. [unclear; Cho writes 大 = 人農業 on the board: the biggest farming is human farming] No, no... One more time? Yes, yes. What is the biggest business? Oh, the most biggest business is human business. Growing people? Growing people? Are you talking about growing people? When you raise people, that is just like a farming.
7:39 That's what he said. It's not my word. So what do you think is the biggest inheritance parents pass on to their children? When parents give you most, what is most asset? What is the most big inheritance? What is the most big inheritance from your parents? Genetics? Life? Life? The spark of life?
8:24 Wisdom? Take care of yourself. 'Taking good care of yourself.' (relaying the room's answer to Cho) Those of you who have had children and raised them [raise your hands?] Who has children? Who is the parents? Then do you know, what is your value to raise them? What is the value? Quality. Nurturing them. Loving them. Showing them love.
9:09 Respect. Socioeconomic status. What about wisdom? The most important is good health. Lose your health and you lose everything. If you lose good health, you lose everything. Then if a person wants to look after their health, what do they have to do to look after it? So if you want to keep your good health, how are you going to do it? You have to eat well. You have to eat healthy things. Eat healthy food and you become healthy.
10:05 So to eat healthy things, healthy farm produce has to be made. So if you want to eat good healthy food, you need to find good healthy crops. So the most important thing for everyone's health is healthy food. So the most important thing is we have to produce healthy food that will keep you healthy. So the people who farm... Farming is the great foundation of all under heaven — that's what it means. 'Nongja cheonha-ji daebon': the farmer is the great root of the world. (written on the board as 農者天下之大本)
10:58 I don't understand that word. Help? Farmers have the one job, the best one. The farming person are the best kind of... Best job, best profession? The farmer is the best profession. Why? Because what guarantees the health of my own child — the one I love most and hold most dear — is healthy food. That's what I mean.
11:45 Oh my gosh! Please say that again, sir. Please say it again. In raising the child you love most, the one so dear to you, isn't the most important thing what they eat? If you want your children to grow healthy and lovingly, to do that you need to give them healthy food. That's why the farmer is the great foundation of the world. That's why the farmer is the most important profession. Am I right?
12:31 Yes, you are the most professional worker in the world. What is the bonding? [unclear] Bonding is you producing the food. [unclear]
13:18 '...and you say you think about love? That's a lie.' (the first word is unclear: the Korean passes hear 신/신앙 'faith'; the interpreter's final English and B's next passage point to 식량, food) [The interpreter checks the word with Cho:] '...thinking of [it] and thinking of health...' — 'If you talk about love without knowing [food], that's a lie.' Oh, ok. So, you need to think about your food, how to raise. If you don't think about the food and raise the food, that is a lie. Do you understand what he is saying? Now, food — say corn, tomatoes, papaya, mangoes — if I could make them myself,
13:59 I wouldn't be farming mangoes, would I? Can you make those? If I could make it myself, would I farm? — that's the question. If you can create those fruits, do you farm or not? Nature does it. They say nature does it. That's something you heard somewhere that you're repeating now. [If,] magically, I
14:44 could make a tomato properly — would I farm tomatoes or not? Oh, this is like a magic. If, magically, you can create the tomato or other fruits, would you farm or not? You wouldn't, would you? You wouldn't. I farm because I can't make it myself. That's why I farm. Because you cannot create it. If there was fruit like a vegetable leaf... that's why you are farming. [unclear] So you depend on the crops. So you lean on the crops. So you farm tomatoes, you farm napa cabbage, you farm cabbage,
15:32 you farm [corn]. Because I can't make them myself, I depend on the crops. ...create all those crops by yourself, that's why you're growing all these different crops. You are farming. Then when you farm, should you farm to suit the crop, or farm by your own judgment? So when you are farming, do you have to farm according to their body, the crop's body, or according to myself? But up to now — have you been farming to suit the crop, or farming to suit your own judgment?
16:32 So in the past, did you try to farm according to the crops or according to your knowledge? Then is that smart? Or foolish? So are you a smart one or a stupid one? You are a fool. [unclear who] And now, university professors and researchers at the research institutes — they all argue from what they themselves know and say they're the smart ones, don't they? So all these scientists and the professors in the farm industry,
17:21 they think their knowledge is the best, that's the way to farm. Is that so, or not? They think that way or not? Then what are these doctors [PhDs]? Smart doctors? Smart-fool doctors? Yes, they think that way. So all these people are... When those smart-fool doctors do their research and spin their theories, the people who follow along and farm that way are smart-fool farmers.
18:14 So those people who follow those ttok-ttok [smart] PhDs, their knowledge, and those ones who follow those ttok-ttok, are they ttok-ttok or not? So do you think that way or do you agree with me? If so, then when you eat [those crops] and look after your health, you're getting your health from foolish farming. [partly unclear] So when you eat those crops, you eat it, and then you are eating those empty [?] kind of food.
19:03 Is my health normal health, or fool's health? So my health is going to turn into an empty health or healthy health? It's going to be empty health. What do you think? What do you think? Fool — fool's health, I'm saying. So as scholarship develops and science develops, more and more... So all these scientific is developing more, higher level, but there's more patients appearing.
20:06 ...[back then] we could farm with human manure. When we farmed that way, there was no [disease] at all. [partly unclear] In Korea, a long time ago, we used human waste to farm. That time we hardly had sick people because we used human waste. There was no... skin disease. [unclear] But after we stopped using that manure and started using chemical fertilizer and pesticides, atopic dermatitis appeared, and a lot of skin disease. Since we don't use human waste as our food material,
20:55 we started using chemical fertilizers and other stuff. There are many cancer patients and many skin diseases appearing. But now a study from a very famous university in America is spreading all over the world, enormously, and here's what it is: say someone gets colon cancer. If you get colon cancer you have to have surgery, right? But instead of surgery, they take a healthy person's stool, dissolve it in water, make it into capsules, and when the patient swallows them, the colon cancer is cured without surgery. They say that medical technique has been developed.
21:45 In America now, who has big intestine cancer — colon cancer — now they use healthy people's waste to cure that cancer. They developed something like that now in America. He wanted to help them with the good pronunciation. [unclear] Referring to a fecal transplant where they take the contents of the lower intestine from
22:35 a healthy individual and place it into the intestines of someone who is ill. Thank you. ...it means [people] get sick. And why do they get sick? Broadly, it's because the soil's capacity is lacking that they got sick. So that has to be fixed — the soil has to be fixed first. You eat all this stuff, the soil is really poor, you are growing food from there, you eat, so your health is deteriorating. So we need to make the soil healthier and then grow food.
23:28 Where do you have to fix first? So which part do you have to fix first, your body or your soil? Understood? — Understood. — What it is, is soil welfare. (Cho has written 토양 복지 on the board) Soil. So that is... soil preparation. Soil revive. Soil well-being. So soil welfare has to come about first... If you want your crops to be healthy, you need to do the soil health first.
24:18 You need to do soil well-being first. Crop welfare has to come about for animal welfare to come about. So if you want your animal healthy, you need to do plant health first. Animal welfare has to come about for human welfare to come about. So if you want your human health to recover, healthy, then you need to do livestock health first. Recover the livestock health first. They push human welfare alone and hardly think about [these three]. Nowadays, they only stress on people's health without looking at these three.
25:08 So they think soil welfare, crop welfare and animal welfare can be achieved through chemistry. But they think all this soil and the crop and animal health, they can fix it with a chemical. That's how they think. And this chemistry works by analysis. (board: 化學 / 分析) So in chemical they need to analyze it. But there's a Korean saying: the field has to be good for you to bear healthy children.
