See Half, Farm Half: The Eightfold Path on the Board
Master Cho Han-kyu, interpreted by Kim Chang, Founder of Korean Natural Farming (Janong)
Spoken in Korean. Translated to English and checked line by line.
Cho writes the Eightfold Path on the flip chart: see rightly, think rightly, speak rightly, live rightly, first alone and then with others. The eye sees only half, and farming by the outward shape is what made the mangosteen rotten inside. Then religion, a plan to record his farm visits, his fee (a tenth of the extra profit) and one last IMO5 question.
What they found
Why does Cho say the mangosteen failed because the farmer only saw half, and what does he ask of farmers next time?
Cho at the flip chart. (Eightfold Path) at the bottom. Clearest at 42:00–44:45. No slides. The page closes with admin (fee, royalty) and an audience question about IMO5.
- Where IMO5 goes — At the drip line: around the edge of the tree, as wide as its spread (the interpreter, checking with Cho in Korean at 59:05).
-
See rightly, then think rightly, speak rightly and live rightly
Board: 正見 正思 正言 正生 under 肉眼 (naked eye); 正觀 正念 正行 under 心眼 (heart's eye); 八正道 at the bottom.
-
Left column: the self alone, seen with the naked eye; right column: life with others, seen with the heart
Cho: before marriage and after marriage. Thinking alone versus thinking with the other person; speaking, then acting.
-
In the mirror you see only half your body; saying you saw it all is a lie
'I saw it with my own two eyes, why call me a liar?' But they saw half.

Farming by the outward shape made the mangosteen rotten inside
You have to grasp the crop's physiology and ecology (생리생태). 'This is seeing only the tree, not seeing its life force.'
-
Cho says what to give when; you have to act on it and check the result
'Then next time I come, I'll drink delicious coffee.'

Keep the Eightfold Path and you farm properly
Cho credits the saying to Chinese Taoism. In Buddhism and Confucianism you reach the Way by effort; in Christianity God gives grace, and you only make the bowl to receive it.

The mangosteen problem holds for papaya, banana, paprika, ginger, onion and garlic
Same timing logic across crops.

Next visit: bring a recorder, write it up and send it to Cho to check
He'll mark what was misheard and send it back.

Cho's fee: a tenth of whatever extra you earn, paid afterwards, on your conscience
Not in advance. The money is to spread natural farming in Hawaiʻi. The room settled on calling it a donation.

IMO5 goes at the drip line
Around the edge of the tree, as wide as its spread.

- Most of this page is philosophy and religion, not technique. The farming link is the mangosteen.
- The fourth character in the right column of the board can't be read from the frames.
- The fee and the China royalty are admin; the royalty number reached the room wrong (see corrections).
- Look at the whole crop, its physiology and life stage, not just its outward shape.
- When you get a prescription, act on it and check the result.
- Record farm visits and write them up; Cho offers to check the write-up.
- IMO5 goes at the drip line, as wide as the canopy.

37:39 You have to see rightly to speak rightly... where did she go? He was looking for me. When you look right, then you speak right words. You have to see rightly to think rightly, and think rightly to speak rightly, and speak rightly to find your way to a right life. When you are able to look correctly, then you can see things correctly, then you can talk correctly, then you can have a correct life.
38:24 Do you understand that? But this one is alone. Simple. But this is only your self. Just one. It's self-centered. But this one is telling us how to live [with others]. This is the same: seeing. It's looking. And this is thinking. This is thinking too. This is action.
39:14 This one is the proof that we live together with others. If this side was before marriage, when you were single, then this side is after marriage. So when you marry, you have to understand each other. What it means is: this side is seeing with the naked eye (肉眼), and this side is seeing with the heart (心眼). Seeing the heart... what you see with the eyes: do you see the whole, or only half? So, okay, this is like when you are single, this is after marriage. When you live with other people, when you live alone, when you are looking at
40:02 the world, or when you live alone, how do you look at the world? And this is thinking, but it's my thinking alone. This is thinking together with the other person. So when you live all by yourself, when you think, You only think for more selfish reasons. But at this time you live with other people, you think about other people. If I've said the right words, if I've spoken, I have to carry it into action before it comes to a conclusion. If you only talk and don't act, [unclear]. So when you're single, you speak right words, but when you are with other people, you need to communicate.
41:05 And then you gotta do the action. You gotta get to work. When you marry, it isn't just saying "I love you" with words. You have to really love for it to be a marriage. So when you are married, not just words, "I love you", you need to act. You need to show that you love each other. Only that way can you live a right life. This is called the Eightfold Path (八正道). The eight right ways to live.
41:57 So, all of you, when you look in the mirror, So, when you look in the mirror, can you see your whole body or only half of it? when you look in the mirror, do you see your whole body, or only half? You see only half and say you saw it all. That's right. People say only look at half and they say I saw all. So someone can say, "I saw it clearly with these two eyes, why do you call me a liar?" So lots of people say, "I saw it with my eyes, why are you lying to me?"
42:45 Lots of people say that. But actually, didn't they see only half and say they saw it all? Then did they tell the truth, or did they lie? So, do they say truth or lie? A liar. So a lie is deceiving the other person. So you deceive the other person, because you lied. When you farm, you look at the crop, its outward shape... If you farm by the outward shape alone, you go along not knowing its heart.
43:33 So when you're farming, you're just looking at the outside appearance of the crop. You didn't see the inside of the crop, actually. So because you farmed by looking only at the outside, So, because you only saw the outside of the crop, that's why it became an unhealthy mangosteen. this mangosteen, rotten inside, was made. An unhealthy mangosteen. So, if you look at the mangosteen's life cycle truly, then you could see the correct way. You have to grasp its physiology and ecology properly to [see its heart].
44:25 So this is seeing only the tree, not seeing its life force. So this side, they saw only the tree. They didn't see the life in the tree. If I talk like this today, the person who gave me this as a gift may feel bad, but I wasn't trying to make you feel bad, but because you gave me this rotten mangosteen, don't take it badly. Because I saw this, I can explain it to all of you in detail, so you did a big thing. Actually, you helped all of us to show what is going on with this fruit.
45:11 So you did a big service. So all of you should give the person who gave me this mangosteen a round of applause. So please have a big hand for her. You don't feel bad, right? You don't feel bad. No, I'm not feeling bad. She says she doesn't feel bad. She doesn't feel bad. That makes me feel good too. So these here are the eight right things, which is why we call it the Eightfold Path, So this is the right way to live, eight of the right ways to live.
46:04 So you have to see all this straight before you can talk with the other person, right? And when you've seen that and thought rightly, you can hold the other person in your heart and care for them, can't you? So when you are looking at the right way, then you will have a right thought, so you can start to be more considerate; you become a more considerate person. Then I say, "Give this, at this time." That's the point. So I tell the person when is the right time to give what.
46:54 Then you have to put those words into practice and see the result. So you need to put it into action so you can see the result. So then when I come back, I can have a delicious coffee. That way, next time I come, I'll drink delicious coffee. So you cannot just talk, you need to put into action. Talking alone won't do. You have to act. So, not just by myself, we need to live right way together. Got it? Got it. Only that way can you live a right life, and not just me living rightly alone; we should live rightly together, shouldn't we?
47:52 So that's the right way to living altogether. So when we farm, we have to keep the Eightfold Path to farm properly. So when we farm, we need to farm in this way, then we can farm much better. This wisdom came out from China. There is Dogyo [Taoism]. Where this saying comes from: there is Taoism in China. Dogyo [Taoism]. I don't know it in English. It teaches the right way. So this is like a moral class, moral religion, moral ethic.
48:42 So in China they have this moral ethic, the wisdom came out from there. So I studied Buddhism a lot, studied Confucianism a lot, and Taoism, and almost every religion on earth, I've read nearly all of them. He read lots of different religion books, Buddhism and Confucian, and they don't know... Daoism. Daoism. So I studied a lot, all those. But what I realized there is this: in Buddhism and Confucianism, a person gains it by their own effort; it's attaining the Way.
49:27 So in Buddhism or Taoism, the people work hard and that's how they receive. But in Christianity, what matters is that God bestows grace. But in Christianity, God is giving you lots of blessing. So a person only has to make the bowl that receives grace and hold it. So human beings, we just have to make the container for receiving the blessing.
50:14 That's all you need. Just receive. That is how it differs from Buddhism and Confucianism. There is a difference between Christianity and other religions. Don't misunderstand me. It's not just selfish talking here. Hallelujah! So, do you understand our mangosteen now? Do you understand about this mangosteen? What is wrong? Not only mangosteen, but papaya, banana, paprika,
51:00 It's not just mangosteen, but papaya, banana, paprika, ginger, onion, garlic, all the same. what's ginger [in English]? And onion, garlic. It's all the same. And there is a timing to it, so next time, when you set the dates, I'll go round the farms, there'll be all kinds of crops, and I'll look at the crops and tell you exactly, and it'll be a great lesson. When he comes back, when he visit all these different farms, there are different crops, and then he will tell
51:47 you what is going with this crop and you will learn much better. At that time, each of you should bring a recorder. Then you record what I say, take it, and write it down. Then take what you wrote down, what you heard, study it, make it into a write-up and send it to me. So after you write it down, all the information he told you, and then make a copy, send me that information.
52:34 I'll look at it: "Ah, this part was misheard, this means that," and I'll check it and send it back. Oh, this person misunderstood this part, etc. To do that, Kim Chang has to give up time translating, and I have to give up time too, so you should put out a little work fee. So, to do that, Kim Chang has to translate and I have to spend time to read that. I need some work fee.
53:24 Compensation. Consulting fee. If you give a lot, I won't say no to it. If you guys give me lots of money, I wouldn't say no. Instead, only when some material resources build up can natural farming spread easily here in Hawaii. Material? Just some money has to pile up. So, if you have enough money, then it's much easier to work. Then, yeah, there's always expenses, that's what.
54:10 So I won't ask for much. If you earned more than you did farming before, then just give me a tenth of the extra. I'm not going to ask you lots of money. So, when you farm with the natural farming, and then if you increase so much from there, From that increase, only give me 10%. I'm not asking for money in advance. Once you've made the money, put it out according to your conscience. I'm not asking you to give me money ahead. After you make money, and then honest, with your honesty,
54:57 with that honesty, give me that money. Saying this now, I'm not someone who only knows money. I give first and ask only from what you gained, so it's not unfair, is it? So I'm not just asking you money. I give you all this information and knowledge. I give you first, and then I'm only receiving very little. So you don't feel bad, right? Right now I'm working in China, and there, just for passing on my technology, the royalty is 150 million won.
55:43 In China, this certain company, he just tells them his technology. And then, you know what? 1,500,000? How much is 1,500,000 won? Oh, take 1,000 out of it. It's like $10,000. Oh, they give you $10,000. Huh? 1,500,000. No. No. 1.5 million. 1.5 million.
56:28 1.5 million. 1.5 million. Renminbi? Renminbi? In [Chinese] money? No. In Korean money. China dollars. Chinese dollars? No, Korean dollars. Oh, they're giving the Korean money. So, 1.5 million dollars. Take three zeros off it. Take out three zeros? No need to calculate, no need to calculate. [unclear] If you think it's [unclear], just put out 10%. It's okay, don't worry about it. Just discard all that. Just what I told you, when you increase from now to where you increased from there, just give me a 10%.
57:14 So, all of you, in Hawaii, to develop natural farming, to develop natural farming in the city-and-country global village so we can live happily: put it out in that happy spirit. So that money is spreading this natural farming throughout the earth. So it's just like a... [Korean word, 'chanjo'?] You give a... Like a forward investment? No, no, not the investment. Profit sharing? Not the profit sharing. We pay the public radio, we give money and all that.
58:01 Donations. Donations, yeah. My brain is getting tired. Are you tired? Please, think of it as a donation. You probably understand all this, right? Next time I come to Hawaii, let's go round [each] farm and diagnose it this way. So, I will try to plan, when I come back next time, we can travel to different farms and
58:46 learn from that farm, with a prescription, how to correct this, etc. Where do you apply IMO5? At the drip line? At the drip line, yes. Drip line? Yes, drip line. [She's asking] where to spread this IMO5. I guess I didn't hear it. I had it down as around the edge of the tree, as wide as its spread.
