The library adds a few points to the answer above.
Joe Peduzzi runs seven IMO collections from nearby nature preserves. (Office Hours Ep. 83, 22:53) Drake's source, Cho, says to pick a spot no human disturbs, with loose, soft soil under the leaf mold. (Cho, Recipe, p. 11) IMO also comes from a field or any site with plenty of decomposed leaf litter, not only bamboo. (Unravelling the Mysteries of KNF, p. 73)
Watch the moisture:
- Do not collect in the rainy season. (Cho, Recipe, p. 11)
- Avoid moist areas. (Cho, Recipe, p. 11)
Leave the rice box out three days. (Student's Manual, Basic Course, p. 44) Another source says four to five days. (Unravelling the Mysteries of KNF, p. 73)
On a small city lot, skip Cho's full process. Make a JMS or an IMO2-based liquid IMO instead. (Office Hours Ep. 90, 41:10)
The library does not name preserves in South Florida or say when the rainy season falls there.
