Eucalyptus & IMO Microbes, JADAM Fish Fertilizer, Calfos Ratios

Drake opens with the Return hexagram, then digs into why eucalyptus and ironwood trees stop IMO4 from heating up: both species run a narrow, selective microbiome and oily leaf chemistry that crowds out other microbes. He recommends gathering leaf soil under broadleaf trees like mango and avocado instead. For a Colorado farmer, he pulls up a Goksung Learning Center video showing how to collect IMO indoors in cold weather: moisten leaf-duff soil, layer it with properly cooked rice and fresh hay bacillus in a box, and bury it to ferment like IMO1.

Other soil topics: for high salinity, add humic and fulvic acids to tie up salts, or build organic matter with IMOs, which produce the same acids naturally; calcium also helps move salts out. Old footage revisits a downtown Hilo restoration project that turned Roundup-killed, bottle-brush-choked ground into taro, sweet potato, pineapple, and lemongrass beds using IMO soil.

The Madang segment covers Young Sang Cho's fresh anchovy JADAM liquid fertilizer: 26 gallons of water, 22 pounds of fish waste, and leaf mold fermented together, diluted at least 1:100 before use. Drake compares its application load, roughly 1 ton per quarter acre, against Master Cho's 25 gallons per acre, about eight times more efficient, and stresses applying JLF/MMS/MLF drenches to a fallow field between seasons rather than onto growing crops.

Listener questions close the show: calfos bone-vinegar ratio is 7:1 by weight, soaking 7 to 10 days with daily stirring until the vinegar taste is gone; the KNF book is available at knfsupport.com; and for sprayers, Drake recommends the Maruyama MS75E mist blower up to 3-5 acres, then a drone or tractor Venturi sprayer beyond that.

Questions answered

  • 6:41 Why doesn't IMO4 heat up under eucalyptus leaves? Can eucalyptus sterilize microbes? — Yes, eucalyptus and ironwood build their own narrow microbiome and their oils suppress other microbes, so gather IMO soil under broadleaf trees like mango or avocado instead.
  • 13:52 Any recommendations for collecting IMO in Colorado? — Mimic cold-climate Korea: gather leaf-duff soil indoors, moisten it, layer it with cooked rice and fresh hay bacillus in a box, and let it ferment like IMO1.
  • 28:17 What do you recommend for high salinity soils? — Add humic and fulvic acids to tie up the salinity, and build organic matter with IMOs, which produce the same acids naturally; calcium also helps transport salts out.
  • 39:17 What's Young Sang Cho's fresh anchovy JADAM liquid fertilizer recipe? — 26 gallons of water, 22 pounds of fish waste, and leaf mold fermented together; it's foul but potent, so dilute at least 1:100 before spraying.
  • 44:23 How does JADAM's application rate compare to Master Cho's KNF methods? — JADAM needs about 1 ton of diluted JLF per quarter acre versus Master Cho's 25 gallons per acre, making Master Cho's method roughly eight times more efficient.
  • 55:04 When's the best time to apply JLF, MMS, and MLF drenches? — Apply them heavily right after harvest or before the next planting while the field is empty, not on growing crops, so pathogens settle before roots return.
  • 1:00:03 How long should bones sit in vinegar for calfos, and what if they keep bubbling? — About 7 to 10 days at a 7:1 vinegar-to-bone ratio by weight; if it still tastes like vinegar, add more bones and keep stirring daily.
  • 1:03:54 Where can I buy Drake's KNF book? — At knfsupport.com, where you can download it with free updates or order a hard copy.
  • 1:05:31 Should I add to my big static leaf composter or start a new pile? — Since it's a fungal pile, leave it undisturbed until it's finished rather than adding fresh material.
  • 1:07:02 What sprayer do you recommend for acreage? — The Maruyama MS75E mist blower for up to 3-5 acres, then a drone sprayer or a tractor's 3-point Venturi sprayer for larger acreage.
