Water-Soluble Phosphoric Acid, Chitin, Bare-Root Tree Planting

Bluegrass Green Thumb asks whether phosphoric acid (WPA) and calcium phosphate are the same. Drake says no — calcium phosphate is KNF Structure (WCP), used constantly in the maintenance solution, while WPA is a separate, non-core solution. Phosphorus deficiency shows up as old leaves dying back first (common in bananas), stunted dark-green new growth, suppressed flowering, and thick fruit skin.

To make WPA, char sesame stems, teabag 1-2 kilos in a hemp cloth bag in 100 liters of water for 7-10 days at 23-25°C, then dilute 0.7 liters of the crude extract in 20 liters of water, or mix 1:1000 with water-soluble calcium. Cecily asks about charred bone meal instead of fresh bones — Drake has never tried it but thinks it could work if charred in an oxygen-free retort. KNF Structure itself can be made from deer bones or fish bones, though not bird bones.

For leftover crab shells, roast them and mix with brown rice vinegar at a 1:10 ratio to make chitin, then dilute 1:1000 and apply throughout the growing cycle — Drake confirms chitin is the same molecule whether it comes from a crab shell or fungal mycelium. For vanilla beans, he recommends water-soluble calcium phosphorus before flowering and walks through Master Cho's seven-solution prescription cycle: maintenance, soil, seed, then alternating leaf and fruit formulas through bloom, ending with harvest and soil formulas again.

Drake explains his bare-root tree planting method: dig a pyramid-shaped hole about 12 inches wide and 6 inches deep at center, cut the taproot, deny water for three days, soak the roots in seed soak solution, spread them out, and pile mulch, IMO, and biochar on top rather than in the hole. He also covers Master Cho's three solutions for soil environment recovery — IMO, seawater diluted 1:30 (or sea salt 1:1000), and wild grass — reads Partida's comment on redox potential and how pathogens like wilt can open the door for beneficial microbes, and answers questions on scaling JADAM to 100-200 acre fields and why he never recommends JADAM sulfur for potato blight.

Questions answered

  • 6:56 Is phosphoric acid (WPA) the same as calcium phosphate (KNF Structure)? — No — calcium phosphate is KNF Structure (WCP), used in the maintenance solution; WPA is a separate, non-core solution.
  • 12:18 What are the signs of phosphorus deficiency, especially in bananas? — Old leaves die back first as nutrients move to the fruit rack, new growth stays small and dark green, flowering is suppressed, and fruit skin turns thick.
  • 15:19 How do you make water-soluble phosphoric acid (WPA)? — Char sesame stems, teabag 1-2 kilos in a hemp bag in 100 liters of water for 7-10 days at 23-25°C, then dilute 0.7 liters in 20 liters of water, or 1:1000 with water-soluble calcium.
  • 20:03 Can you use charred bone meal instead of fresh bones? — Possibly, if you char the bones without burning them to ash in an oxygen-free retort, but Drake has never tried bone char himself.
  • 20:48 What nutrients should I spray on vanilla beans for big, long pods? — Use water-soluble calcium phosphorus (KNF Structure) before flowering, then follow the seven-solution prescription cycle in the recipe book.
  • 26:07 Why would you use phosphoric acid instead of calcium phosphate? — Calcium phosphate is used constantly in the maintenance solution, while phosphoric acid is more potent and specialized, so use it carefully to avoid imbalance.
  • 27:06 What bones can I use to make KNF Structure? — Any land-based, weight-bearing animal bone works, like deer, plus fish bones — but not bird bones.
  • 27:18 What can I do with leftover cooked crab shells? — Dissolve them in vinegar to make chitin — roast crab or shrimp shells with brown rice vinegar at a 1:10 ratio, then dilute 1:1000 and use throughout cultivation.
  • 30:02 I'm planting 30 trees, bushes, and perennials but have no IMO yet — what should I do? — Make a quick, disgustingly cheap microbe solution of water, microbes, starch, and salt that peaks in 24-36 hours, and apply it before planting.
  • 31:20 What's the best way to plant a tree in the KNF method? — Dig a pyramid-shaped hole (12in wide, 6in deep), cut the taproot, deny water 3 days, soak roots in seed soak solution, spread roots, then mulch and IMO on top, not in the hole.
  • 34:24 Is chitin in crab shells the same as chitin in mycelium? — Yes — chitin is chitin, a long-chain polymer of N-acetyl glucosamine found in fungal cell walls and arthropod exoskeletons alike.
  • 44:33 How do I scale up JADAM techniques for 100-200 acre fields? — Get big tanks and follow the same recipe — scale up the starch, salt, and seawater, then dilute well before running it through the irrigation system.
  • 45:33 Can JADAM sulfur solve potato late blight? — It might work, but Drake never recommends it — it makes crops taste like sulfur, and fixing the soil and farming practices is the better answer.
  • 52:04 What are Master Cho's three solutions for soil environment recovery? — Indigenous microorganisms (IMO), seawater diluted 1:30 or sea salt diluted 1:1000, and wild grass.
  • 1:02:39 Can you make lye from wood ash and rainwater? — Yes — and adding urine to the lye solution makes potassium nitrate, which is also an explosive precursor.
