Frost Protection with KNF Medicine, Worm Castings, Boron

Drake opens with the Lāʻau moon days, then answers a frost question: mist plants a few hours before a predicted freeze with KNF medicine (oriental herbal nutrient) — garlic, ginger, licorice, cinnamon, and angelica steeped in alcohol, diluted 1:1000. The warming herbs and alcohol heat the plant and its microbes enough to dodge a light frost.

A Zone 7b viewer asks about making solutions and IMO through winter. IMO still works below freezing — it's actually easier to vent and cool a pile in winter — just stack it taller and add more hay if it runs too cold. Plant juice needs live fruit, so that waits for spring, but calcium (charred bone, toasted eggshell), KNF medicine, and lactobacillus cultures all tincture fine indoors over the cold months.

Worm leachate and castings come up as a humic and fulvic acid boost: use fresh leachate, not anaerobic and stinky, diluted 1:200 to 1:1000 as a fungal food alongside propagated IMO. Boron gets the same treatment — it drives calcium metabolism and hormone function, but plants show toxicity above 1.8 ppm, and seawater or diluted borax already supplies enough.

Drake closes with earthworms versus composting worms for in-situ castings, and his take on GMOs: the Hawaiian ringspot-resistant papaya was a band-aid for chemical farming that had already killed the soil microbiome, not a fix worth trusting long-term.

Questions answered

  • 3:07 Why gather plants during the Lāʻau (medicine) moon days? — Harvest plant material in the morning during Lāʻau days, when sun and moon are both above the horizon and the plants hold the most juice and potency.
  • 9:59 What Pure KNF classes are instructors teaching right now? — Pedro Camargo teaches near São Paulo, Brazil Dec 8-10; Bronson Lubresky ran a free class through the Alabama extension at Jones Valley Farm.
  • 21:47 How do I stop frost from damaging my plants overnight? — A few hours before a predicted frost, mist plants with KNF medicine (garlic, ginger, licorice, cinnamon, angelica in alcohol) diluted 1:1000.
  • 27:53 Can you make KNF solutions and IMO during winter in Zone 7? — Yes — IMO turns fine in winter and is easier to vent and cool; stack piles taller and add more hay if it runs cold. Plant juice needs live fruit, so wait for spring.
  • 35:36 Where should a beginner start with Korean Natural Farming? — Start with KNF food and the disgustingly cheap microbes recipe, then watch Pure KNF Solutions and Microbial Theory before the certification course.
  • 40:45 How do worm castings and leachate fit into KNF solutions? — They're not a separate solution but a humic and fulvic acid boost — add fresh leachate or castings tea at 1:200 to 1:1000 to feed fungi and beneficial microbes.
  • 48:52 What is the biological role of boron in plants and soil? — Boron drives calcium metabolism and hormone function, but plants show toxicity above 1.8 ppm, so dilute borax lightly — seawater already supplies enough.
  • 56:39 Are earthworms and composting worms interchangeable for castings? — No — red wigglers and blue worms differ from earthworms, but fallen leaves draw earthworms into the garden, and IMO on top brings them to the surface.
  • 58:37 What does Drake think about GMOs like the Hawaiian papaya? — The ringspot-resistant GMO papaya was a band-aid for chemical farming that had already killed the soil microbiome, not a real fix.
  • 1:05:13 Where can I find KNF research papers and get support? — Pureknf.org's research tab hosts peer-reviewed papers, and knfsupport.com has the office hours archive and searchable Q&A.
