Water-Soluble Calcium Taste Test, Cold Tolerance, Volcanic Ash
Drake opens with a reading from the I Ching, then works through soil and tree questions: drilling holes around root zones and filling them with IMO4, cinder, biochar, and compost to get oxygen to roots, and planting trees on a shallow pyramid instead of in a deep pit. He argues pH matters less than people think — feed the soil organic matter and let microbes set the pH themselves. On Promix mycorrhiza products for terpenes, he says a boost helps early but won't persist like IMOs do.
Reactivating supersaturated LAB (KNF Protectors) just takes water, diluted 1:1000, with a few hours' rest making it stronger. For KNF Food and KNF Medicine, he recommends the most vigorous local weeds, comfrey (fermented with a third its weight in brown sugar, 3–5 days), banana shoots, and horsetail for silica. Fermentation breaks down most toxins, so even city weeds are usable with judgment. He also breaks down oxygen content by water source: well water near 0%, stream water about 3%, rainwater about 8%, and a vortex brewer pushing 12–16%.
For cold snaps, he sprays KNF Medicine (OHN) diluted 1:1000 foliarly and keeps IMOs active, since microbial activity generates warmth. After volcanic ash, he leads with KNF Protectors to help plants handle the sudden change. Rice in IMO collection works with just enough resident fungus working symbiotically with bacteria, though the exact mechanism isn't fully studied. In bioponics, all nine solutions work but need more dilution than soil use. He demonstrates tasting water-soluble calcium (KNF Structure) for doneness — sweet bone-wine smell, chalky taste, no vinegar bite — then covers feminizing seeds with pre-ovulation urine and using the maltose recipe during flowering changeover to reduce seed set, as done in Korean vineyards. He closes with KNF Farm training dates: January 10–16 and February 14–20, 2022.
Questions answered
- 6:05 How do you get more oxygen to tree roots stuck in a dug hole? — Drill holes around the root zone and fill them with IMO4, cinder, biochar, and compost to build an aerobic soil column.
- 9:02 JMS is pH neutral to slightly alkaline, IMO is acidic — does that matter? — Don't chase macro pH; get organic matter and microbes into the soil and let the microbes set pH where they need it.
- 12:13 Has anyone tried Promix Connect mycorrhiza on herb crops for more terpenes? — A boosted transplant mix helps early on but won't persist long-term; IMOs bring lasting balance and real terpene production.
- 17:25 How do you reactivate LAB that's been supersaturated? — Mix it with water at 1:1000; letting it sit a few hours first makes it even stronger.
- 23:23 What plants work best for KNF Food and KNF Medicine? — Use your most vigorous local weeds for KNF Food; KNF Medicine traditionally uses garlic, ginger, licorice, and angelica.
- 29:19 What about comfrey for KNF solutions? — Comfrey is a nutrient accumulator; ferment it with a third its weight in brown sugar for 3–5 days for a strong KNF Food.
- 34:00 Any plant recommendation for cold-climate KNF Food? — Horsetail aggregates silica and grows well in mainland climates like Alaska.
- 36:20 What if the plants I'm gathering are from a questionable or urban source? — Fermentation breaks down most toxins, so city weeds like purslane and dandelion are usable if you consider the source.
- 43:06 Does the water source affect oxygen content for plants? — Well water has near 0% oxygen, stream water about 3%, rainwater about 8%, and a vortex brewer can push it to 12–16%.
- 48:00 What are the best recommendations for building cold tolerance in plants? — Spray KNF Medicine (OHN) diluted 1:1000 foliarly before a cold snap, and keep IMOs active since their activity generates heat.
- 50:18 How do you deal with volcanic ash landing on crops? — Apply KNF Protectors right away since they help plants handle sudden environmental change; rinse leaves and spray KNF solutions.
- 51:58 How does rice attract fungi if it's mainly a bacterial food in IMO collection? — Just enough resident fungus works symbiotically with the bacteria on contact with soil, though the exact mechanism isn't fully studied.
- 54:12 How well does KNF work in bioponics? — All the solutions work, but dilute more than 1:1000, and start with KNF Protectors to help solubilize calcium and phosphate.
- 58:49 What's the proper smell and taste for finished water-soluble calcium (KNF Structure)? — It should smell like sweet bone wine and taste chalky with no vinegar bite once the acid has fully reacted.
- 1:02:50 Can maltose keep a pollinated plant from setting seed? — Applying the maltose recipe during the flowering changeover, as used in Korean grape vineyards, can reduce seed set.

0:00 Hey, aloha natural farmers, next level natural farmers, those of you tuning into the KNF office hour with myself, Dr. Drake, and thanks for joining in. I know last week had some technical difficulties. It was raining really hard here in Hawaii. We got about 10 inches of rain in about three days or so. So it's really coming down. And so my internet wasn't coming through as smooth as it was. So last week ended up kind of cutting it a little short. And I didn't even post that as a watch later because we just kind of started with the beginning.
0:46 but I did get some encouraging feedback from some viewers that you know it's really about the the message that's coming through and even if my video is a little bit laggy or whatever because I'm off grid here at the can of farm that it's you know it's the audio is coming through smooth and and that's really you know most of what I'm doing is is audio coming through and some visual things and you don't necessarily need to see my my face and all that even though master cho says there are pigs in my beard um so anyway i just wanted to kind of bring you up to
1:25 speed from what happened last week and thank you for being here and start off this week similar to last week with a little bit of reading from one of my favorite books which is great inspiration and this is the I Ching. So today's reading is the army and in times of war it is desirable to be led by a cautious inhumane general. The hexagram Shi is a guide to proper conduct in the face of adversity. It is inevitable that we sometimes face trials and challenges in life. How we prepare ourselves, by whom we are led, and how we conduct ourselves during these wars determines whether we
2:13 are victorious or not. The I Ching counsels us to follow the example of a first-rate army. A truly powerful army always consists of a number of devoted soldiers who discipline themselves under the leadership of a superior general. If he has achieved his position through force, the general will not last for long and he will lose the support of his army when he needs it most if on the other hand he has become a leader through superior conduct and even-handed treatment of his fellow soldiers then his power is well consolidated and it endures so it is with us only by conducting ourselves humanely
3:00 and with persevering balance can we have genuine influence in trying times. There is always the temptation to be led into battle by our egos, but we are guaranteed a humiliating defeat if we turn our inferiors loose in this way. A superior person achieves victory in the same fashion as a superior army by putting his inferior emotions under the guidance of his superior emotions and by proceeding cautiously, modestly, and with the continued goal of achieving peace and detachment. You are advised to prepare for a trial now.
3:45 Your chances of success will be determined by how you conduct yourself within and without. If you remain alert, modest, just, and independent, all will go well. If you are gentle and humane, you will have the allegiance of those around you. Advance cautiously when the time is right, and when it is not, do not allow your ego to stand in the way of retreat and disengagement. Remember that the ultimate victory in any battle comes when we regain our inner independence, our neutrality, and our equanimity. These can only be won by placing our inferiors under the leadership of our superiors.
4:35 Do this now and success will be yours. Whew, so if that isn't inspiring for kind of our current times, we're under definitely some challenging things going on. Definitely a time to get our egos in check so that we can focus on what's important. And, you know, for me, it's making my farm crank. It's providing food security right here. It's a sense of sovereignty. It's all those things. So I hope you find that relevant. And I hope, you know, it's a good way to kind of start off my day. I hope it's a good way to start off these office hours with you.
5:21 coming up right here is I want to get to the questions that were asked two weeks ago. I guess this was on October 3rd. Yeah, it had to be. And so these were the old questions here and got a comment here from Har-Smarina Singh. Not sure how to pronounce your first name, but Mr. Singh sounds like you're a Sikh and shout out to all those guys with good faith practicing that stuff screwing the soil to allow more air to reach the soil layers so screwing the soil that's that's an interesting thing I'm not sure if you guys are familiar with my video that I released about how
6:10 to screw your soil with KNF and kind of a click-baity type of headline on it but if you search on my youtube channel you'll find um screw screwing your soil and that is um one of the the screw your soil is kind of a parody little joke that i made and what i did is i took a um little auger on a drill and i'm drilling holes around the root layer and then i'm putting in cinder and biochar and compost and then a little bit of IMO4 mixed into that and what it does is it creates an aerobic soil column because one of the biggest problems with roots and die off in leaves especially
6:57 around fruit trees is that they're getting not enough oxygen especially if you've dug a hole to plant your tree and and then you plant your tree the roots don't penetrate out that layer how master cho instead advises you to plant a tree is kind of on a pyramid where you plant it and the roots can reach out so instead of digging a deep pit how we usually do and amending this pit we dig a pyramid and then plant the roots out and it's very shallow imagine it only being like you know less than a foot deep and then the roots go out and then you amend on the top so that comes down
7:37 and it encourages the roots to reach out but if you haven't done that and a lot of my plantings here were done before i knew this information so my plants are in these these um you know tombs almost they're graves and so what helps is to drill these holes on the outside and to fill those with imos and cinder and biochar and compost like i talked about that helps those the roots reach out and grow and penetrate through the soil and then i continually drill those holes further and further can't see my hand over there but further and further out and it encourages the roots to reach
8:15 out and so it's a it's a way to do this um so that's what i mean by screwing your soil and more air more oxygen oxygen in the root system is one of the most important nutrients you can get like you know we always think of amending by putting in rock minerals and all these things but don't underestimate the power of sunlight air and water those being the four elements that you know and the earth minerals are important but if you don't have the first four you don't have anything going on so don't underestimate those things um second comment by him uh by mr sing
8:59 is JMS is pH neutral to slightly alkaline versus IMO, which is acidic. And I always want to address pH as something that even though it can be important, it's not as important as you think. Because if you can get good organic material into your soil, good organic matter, when that material converts to matter you build humic structures then the microbes start to manage your ph and it's not about this macro picture of what ph is my soil because you don't want your ph to be some certain some your soil to be some certain ph actually you want the microbes to dictate the ph
9:48 because they will change it from being more alkaline or more acidic based on what minerals they want to solubilize. So what's a more important thing to think about is not the pH of your solutions, what you're putting on, how you're trying to manage this macro pH in this whole system because you want the individual microbes, like for instance, right in the root zone if this is a root tip headed out microbes are going to colonize right in a few micrometers around this root and they're going to change the ph radically different to to solubilize certain
10:29 things and fungus is going to reach out from those root tips deep into your soil and it's going to change the ph there to then send that nutrient through the mycelial or the hyphae network back to your root in exchange for certain sugars and different root exudates. And so if you think of your soil this way of not thinking about the pH so much, I know if you're an indoor grower and you only have your soil bag, don't get me wrong, it's important to kind of balance your pH. You don't want to have like something crazy, but not to think so much pH, pH, to think more, hey, how can I get
11:07 more organic matter in here? How can I get more microbes? And that's going to provide much more long-term stability and your microbes are going to then be able to solubilize things when they need to. And you're not going to have nutrient lockout and those types of things. So in general, I don't worry too much about pH. I do kind of put some dolomite out into my soil when I first start because I'm in very acidic kind of, I don't know, andesols or there's some certain soil profile that I can't recall right now, but it does help to kind of get things kick-started
11:45 in the beginning, but largely my focus is on the, you know, getting the biology out there and making that happen. So last little few more questions here from these and then I'll jump into, I got actually a few email questions, which I encourage you to do, and then jump to the live, or maybe I'll, who knows if I'll follow that order. But so Greg was asking, has anyone tried Promix Connect Microrhiza, which he says is glomus propagulis, 6,000 pounds per gram on herb crops for added production and more terpenes. So, you know, when I grow my herbs,
12:32 like rosemary and basils and those types of things, which, you know, I'm trying to, I know what you're implying here, but I still want to, last time my video didn't get monetized, and I think it's talking about herbs. So I'm just going to talk about herbs in the most general sense. Hope the AI doesn't figure out what I'm talking about. But I'm totally, I'm not that naive here, just so you know. But my, you know, if I really want to get great terpenes out of my rosemary, it's about the IMO. Having these specific micro-rysae that you can get and buy
13:09 in a pre-mix or in a grow mix or in these certain things is great. But really, the IMOs are going to fulfill those niche and they're going to bring the natural plant terpenes and when they bring your plant into balance like what we know when your plant's out of balance it can put out you know this many additional plant secondary metabolites which are terpenes when your plant comes into balance the amount of terpenes your plant can put out just becomes monumentous and it's really about bringing that balance in so anytime you're amending what certain things like
13:48 in a pro mixer for instance i'm not saying it's bad but what i'm saying is it's not necessarily going to be um sustainable over the long run like they may be out there right when you first amend it but any bugs in a jug you get any microbes that you're um trying to put out there that you haven't caught from your local environment and then built up this way even lactobacillus will become much less dominant, similar to some other things we're trying to do with, you know, that kind of stuff to people is your best thing is your natural immunity that you can build up.
14:24 It's going to be way, way better and provide much more balance in everyone's life. And that's really what life is about, especially natural farming, is about returning to this balance, returning to these areas of natural immunity, natural health, connection with the world. It's really the world, even though, you know, nature can be quite cruel and seeming, it's actually the balance that is quite benevolent to us. So Greg was saying he, or someone was saying to Greg that he liked it better than pure cocoa coir for potted hydro but now he is entirely um living soil-based which
15:10 which is the key you know when when people are saying they're they're living soil-based that is the the um that's what i'm talking about that's the that's the balance that you want to get into and that's where you want to where you want to be so um so he's talking about pro mix dips and then connect with 30 000 glomulus on a transplant plug i think it's a good idea to get your plant started but like i said it's not gonna persist in the long run so you gotta be you gotta be careful with what you're you know what you're doing um and then
15:49 yeah and so he's just saying in early stage to supercharge it so that's you know with that thinking that's that's where it's at and that's what's going on so let me let me jump now I'll jump into these live questions and then I'll get back to these other, um, other things. Oh, it's Mark from Santa Cruz, man. I missed you. Our, our, so my, um, one of my students that came here to the KNF farm is, is on the, um, on the live stream here, Mark. And, um, he helped us really get things kickstarted in the early parts of 2020. He was here January, 2020,
16:29 and he stayed a few days after my class and we totally retrofitted my barn. We ended up building a solid wall up there on the chicken side and it really helped me get my storage and feed mixing area together. We also plumbed in a sink up there, moved my water tank, put in a pump. So now when you come to the KNF farm, instead of when we're up at my barn training, instead of trying to wash with a bucket coming out of this thing. You've now got running water. We just moved light years ahead. So shout out to Mark. And we also did the KNF conference at his place. Right. Yeah. And that
17:14 was, that was epic. You can catch some of that on my YouTube and relive the amazing things that we've done here. So Jose is asking how to reactivate LAB that has been super saturated. And so that's a great question. How to reactivate it is mixing it with water. When you take super saturated LAB, which I call them KNF protectors in the pure KNF vocabulary, because calling them protectors gives you an idea of what they do, what their function is. They are protecting your plants. They're also providing just as a protector does, like a parent for a child.
18:03 And that's why I call them protectors. But to reactivate them, because they're super saturated with sugar, the only thing you have to do is mix them with water. If you let them sit in the water for a few hours, they will get even stronger. and um and and more activated but you don't have to you can put them out right away um just just mix it one to one thousand into your water that way you're for plants you're getting the correct amount um and they'll they'll reactivate in the water just you know if you've ever left water out
18:37 with a few nutrients in it you know how stinky it gets after a little bit of time and that's what all those bacteria activating. However, when your stings are getting stinky, that means that there's anaerobic bacteria living. So when you put just a splash of LAB in there, they help keep it facultatively aerobic. Although I believe that they call it facultatively anaerobic, but they help bringing the oxygen into this system and can really help your plants to balance out. So by just adding them back to water, you reactivate them. Especially if you're putting a bit of can of food,
19:12 which is also people call it fermented plant juice and a little bit of the knf medicine which other people call it the oriental herbal nutrient but those things are these activators biostimulants that really help these things come in in building sort of a compost tea although it's a static one versus a aerobic one however you could aerobically do this in a in a compost tea brewer and if you're interested in that you can check it out on my on natural farming hawaii i have a um vortex brewer that i use in my operation and it's you know oxygenated water is probably the most important
19:54 thing that you can put out there like i was saying earlier about drilling for your roots pouring oxygenated water on them is another amazing great thing to do um so yeah i hope that answers that. Anything that's super saturated, that's why when you super saturate with sugar, it's such a good idea versus trying to preserve with something like phosphates or other ways, like how they preserve Coca-Cola where they put a bunch of phosphoric acid in it. Those can cause other issues versus the sugar that we super saturate with becomes an immediate
20:30 food source for waking your microbes back up and giving them exactly what they need. And it's not detrimental to any of the other biology it becomes a carbonaceous food source which is what these microbes in their natural environment are used to eating you know for thousands of years leaves fall they're made of carbon like the soil is the microbes are pulling carbon out of the air into the soils in the form of sugary exudates this is the food that they are used to eating so think of it that way it's this is the that's why i think knf is one of the you know the best ways to farm
21:08 even though in and go with a hybrid approach or bringing your best things in but don't ignore the fact that this is in harmony in balance with nature and you're unlocking thing millions of years of evolution you're also bringing trillions of friends which are the microbes to help you on your farm if you're not farming with these imos you're farming by yourself you're farming solo you're trying to be this person that's trying to do everything and if we go back to the beginning of the reading is that you know are you a first-rate general or is the first-rate general
21:46 the one that cultivates the soil that gives their soldiers which are these microbes the the the materials they need to be of service to win this war you know of healing our planet especially now when they're talking about um the the climate and these different things what is climate stability it is living microbes it's living soil it's fertile soil and all those hinge around indigenous microorganisms having these cycles function having your soil become well fed and to feed itself so that it stays alive and living so that it can be there to serve you when you need it
22:28 right so again to bring that back to the original reading of this this episode this office hour it's just all in alignment of what you're doing you know you become that superior general put your microbes out feed them get your IMOs in the right place okay I like I feel like sometimes I talk kind of fast and ranty. I notice usually when I watch YouTube, I put it at 1.5 times and I speed it up. And I watched people at regular speed. I'm like, man, they're talking so slow. And I wonder if it translates over to me talking faster in life because I watch YouTube so fast.
23:07 I'm like, oh man, maybe I should talk a bit slower. But hopefully it's coming through to you. Hopefully you enjoy this info stream coming through. I mean, obviously you do if you're tuned in and watch this far but i got another question here from jose saying um could you suggest some plants for the different solutions or maybe the characteristics of the plant should that the plant should have i think i read somewhere that plants that help digestion is a good way to start thank you okay so i think you're talking about two different solutions here and i want to
23:46 let you know in korean natural farming there's nine different solutions and sometimes as a as a brand new person to korean natural farming it can get a little bit overwhelming because there are these nine different tools and in a mix match which is why i rename them in the pure knf vocabulary in a way where we can understand it it's not just a bunch of acronyms soup but you can actually understand these tools and the tools are as different as a saw to a level to a hammer which you need all those different tools to build a house just like this you need these different
24:25 tools and they have different functions to build your soil okay so so that's i think in this case to address this where i think you're confusing two of them is because one of them is what we call the knf medicine and this is the herbal tincture that i was talking about that is also called oriental herbal nutrient or ohn but it's much better to think of it as the medicine and this one is the one that deals with digestion as well as reproduction. And these are herbs that you know that you ferment them first and then you tincture them. And you're getting out different properties.
25:06 So these types of herbs you should look like traditionally what's used is garlic, ginger, licorice, and angelica. Those are the five herbs that are used in it. All those have the common denominator of digestion and reproduction. Okay, so that's one of them. That particular solution is maybe less important than what I was talking about earlier, which is the KNF food, which mimics plant exudates. And this is where a lot of people, you know, they'll call it the FPJ or fermented fruit juice, these other names for this same solution.
25:46 I think it's easiest to think of it as can of food because that's what you're doing. It's like just we sit down to a snack of salad or whatever we eat. The plants eat these same things. So this is where it's used and you can target different plants. Besides the medicine, I kind of had those five herbs and that's traditionally how it's done. the can of food enables you to choose whatever you want so one of the best things to use is to look around your place and find the most vigorous growing weeds so what's what's just cranking in
26:27 your natural soil in your natural environment what's you know when you like for instance if you bear the ground what pops back first and in spring you know it's it's your your flowers those types of things that are coming back real fast, go out there and you can make three types of K&F food. You can make it from the growth tips, you can make it from the flowering or unripe fruits, or you can make it from the ripe fruits. Now, of course, not all plants are going to make fruits and flowers right away. So the growth tips, those vigorous growing weeds, if you go out there and
27:05 you just gather the very tips of it not the whole plant because the whole plant has other it doesn't have the same things you're looking for in there but just gathering the growth tips of the most vigorous growing weeds now you and then mix that with um about a third to half of sugar all the way up to equal parts but most weeds you're working with will only need about um a third of the sugar by weight so if i if i pick three pounds of plants i only need to add one pound of brown sugar massage that in you'll notice juice will it'll start to look like you're cooking it like you're
27:40 cooking spinach it'll start to wilt that juice that comes out is the stuff that now you're capturing all those hormone growth hormones and enzymes everything that's making that weed just shoot up and grow you're capturing that and as that juice comes out then you separate and pour out the solids can feed those solids to a pig or ferment them or excuse me or compost them but that juice that comes out now you take that and if you're gonna store it just in your um at room temperature you need to add enough sugar to super saturate it so if you're not familiar
28:18 with what that is check out my videos on super saturations right on the top of my channel it's a featured video because that's one of the most important things that got overlooked by some other folks teaching and you get that preserved. Now you dilute that in water and give it back and that's giving all that vigorousness that those weeds had to this plant. Now the question is can I suggest certain plants and so again that your most vigorous weeds that's what I recommend because it's free it's cheap it's easy. Now if you want to target this thing
28:52 a little better. You know, I can suggest here from the Hawaii plants, because those are the most I'm familiar with, but you look for the characteristic a plant has. So one thing that's kind of almost universal and ubiquitous, I can even grow it in Hawaii, and I've seen it growing all the way up as far as Alaska. So I know it grows in a bunch of different climate regions, is comfrey and the comfrey plant is a nutrient accumulator an ancient recipe was to take the the comfrey leaves and just put them in a bucket of water and then when it smells nasty dump it
29:35 over and that's similar to the jadam recipes of the jadam liquid fertilizer but you can take it up a level and do the can of food recipe which is even more superior and this is to follow that same recipe by mixing in uh one third of the weight of brown sugar mixing it until it gets kind of wilted and then letting it ferment for um three to five days uh maybe if it's really cold maybe seven days but you'll smell it and and it'll change from plant material smell to slightly um alcoholic slightly fermented type of smell and when it has that smell then you extract that
30:17 liquid off again super saturated and now you've gotten like this super nutrient accumulation type of thing and so i highly recommend like the comfrey plant and um i make it all the time it also has like allotonin in it and i don't think i'm quite pronouncing that that compound correctly but it's known as bone knit and that thing can go in it'll strengthen your teeth it'll strengthen your fingernails it it'll help wound healing like if you get cut you take a little of that sugary solution and rub it on you sugar is good for your skin the comfrey is good for your skin and you
30:57 will super heal um it's amazing at curative properties so not only are these things good for your plants they're also good for your human body um and the way we do it in pure knf it's all edible you know you can i ingest these things all the time they're all in my beard last week i was showing how it's up in my hat you know it's like i'm saturated in these so um and if you're in the tropics my you know my recommendation is banana shoots little bananas coming up they're so juicy you take those and you just cut them with a knife into like quarter inch pieces um you know don't
31:33 don't spend a whole bunch of time chopping chopping and cutting things really fine it's more just so you can mix this stuff in a bowl or a bucket and get it correct you know and if you're on a farm you should be making at least five gallon buckets if not you know you can really go big and make like 32 gallon trash cans i wouldn't go bigger than that however just make multiple smaller like and by smaller i mean like 32 gallon is probably the biggest i would go it's just too unwieldy to try to take something larger than that and pour it out and separate it and all these
32:07 things you know some people want to go really big i mean go go for it if you got a crane or something show that stuff off prove me wrong hashtag drake's wrong or something but um go big or go home i don't know but um you know and if you're on a personal level you know like a jar this size because a quart it's about about a liter jar um it you know it's fine to make and you'll get a little bit of juice out of that and that stuff can help a small home garden do its thing um so um yeah bamboos are good um sweet potatoes um i i often make it out of uh you know unripe bananas
32:50 i got a lot of those banana flowers for the flowering session you know i think there was a joke at one point that korean natural farming is all about bananas it's just because hawaii is one of the main uh bases of this stuff you know we've we brought it over from korea we've translated it we've brought it to the western world and we happen to live in hawaii and we love bananas here they're so easy to grow it's it's like one plant makes you know like a gallon of juice for me it's i i don't even have to mess around but i'm not using the big banana stocks that are mature
33:25 i'm using the the new keikis the new shoots coming off keiki means child there is one meaning of his child in hawaiian so i'm using the young ones you know like it's just like you don't you know the young things have the nutrients they're growing the old things are kind of old decaying they don't have for your time and effort and energy and sugar you're going to put into it you you want the most vital parts of the plant um you know and i yeah so those are those are the things I use a lot, papayas, I just happen to have a lot of these things around. If you are,
34:01 you know, up in America, I know horsetail grows really well. That aggregates silica, and that's a really good thing to be putting on your plants. If you study biodynamics, which kind of got into last office hour, it's talking about how, you know, silica is such an important thing and they're making it from quartz crystals but plants aggregate it too so look up um you know get a get a medicine at your feet type of book i don't i don't know i'm assuming those exist for most places see what things aggregate and and start to use those um it's really it's
34:41 really a way to um you know take what was otherwise rubbish or trash sorry it's kind of Hawaiian idiom to say rubbish although people tell me I'm like British or something or have an accent I'm not sure but take these otherwise useless plants to you that are causing problems and turn them into solutions and now you're like permaculture on steroids because you're you know dealing with above below getting this whole thing together you're utilizing things that are already there it's not costing you money you don't have to go to the store and try to buy a bunch of tropical
35:16 fruit. You can use the apples that grow, the pears that grow, the things around you. There's all kinds of things. When I hear people say that they have trouble to know what to get to make these juices out of, it's just look around. And if you're in the city, I was in Los Angeles. My auntie lives in LA. And people were saying there's nothing to go. I walked down the street. I was walking, maybe I walked like 10 blocks because I was going to the car rental place before I was starting the KMF conference tour, which I drove from California
35:54 all the way up to Vancouver, Washington and did workshops the whole way. And hopefully those will start again if, you know, I'm allowed to fly and all that. But back to the point, I found purslane growing in the parking lot, just like out of the cracks of the city. There's dandelions, there's all kinds of things. And you can say, oh, it's contaminated because of the city, but the fermentation process will deal with a lot of those toxins. It'll clean them up. And maybe those aren't the ones that you get in the city that you're wanting to eat.
36:35 you know as you hear i'm saying it's all edible of course consider your source of where you get it from but to me it's like this this there are resources everywhere and if you're just going to spray it on your plant it's going to go through a fermentation process and the microbes will break down the toxins and then the odds of those toxins accumulating into you is far less than you'd think i mean it's in in because microbes like for instance an oil spill we look at it oh it's a toxic event microbes look at that as like yay look at all this food and they bring the earth
37:09 back into balance and they help to mitigate these types of problems so you know consider your source you know don't don't just be like oh dr drake said i could eat this stuff right out of the sewer no like you know think about it but but um there are resources plants everywhere weeds everywhere walk you know within the city without of the city just walk around those things that are thriving naturally in your area that's what you want to use okay so a little bit a little bit long on that i gotta got some more questions here um man it's amazing to see how thankful people are
37:47 reading reading these comments here and just seeing like that's i mean that's my motivation for doing this i really you know i thought about it i'm like i know what i'm you know I have this experience and I looked and there's kind of a vacuum of, of people and I'm just trying to get good info out to people around the world. So, um, you know, if, if you do, however, if you do want to support me, I should, I should mention that. And cause I, cause I, you know, um, I love doing just, uh, charity and all that, but I do want to do just mention to you, if you do want to support me, um,
38:24 there is this website here, which, oh yeah, I look at these nice transitions. I figured out how to use OBS in the past week and got this thing nice. But this is naturalfarminghawaii.net. And this recipe book right here you can buy. You get all these recipes I'm talking about. It's translated nicely into English. I update the book quite regularly. Although I haven't put out one for a few months now, but it's due for it. I have edits on my computer. I just need to compile them into a version that I'm happy with and put it out.
39:00 Always try to keep it really complete and upgrade it without losing things. But these, you know, you can click here, get the recipe book. It sends a few bones, Federal Reserve notes my way, which helps me. You know, I don't want to just like say I completely don't need help, but I also just, you know, spreading this knowledge around, getting it out to people. And then while I'm at this website, there's one other thing that I wanted to touch on. And that is if you go here to this legacy or excuse me, recipes here in the menu bar and you go down to legacy recipes, these down at the bottom.
39:34 This is the material from Master Cho. And he gave this material to us in 2011. and what these are are a bunch of um slides and so forth that are from master cho and these are not the easiest to read they're definitely in what i call kringlish which is you know korean english translation type of thing but these are the presentations he gave to us when he certified us as advanced instructors. And although I guess it was just instructors, I've since gone to a bunch of advanced trainings
40:20 that I've got a little bit more, like a lot bit more certified in all this stuff. And when I first started after this class, I had no idea what I was doing. I was just like, I'll just try it. And I've learned so much in the meantime. But there are all these recipes and presentations. and so I'm not going to get into it right now but do check it out it's under the recipes and down here at the bottom of this thing under legacy recipes I use the computer a lot I don't know how mobile friendly it is but you'll be able to see that I haven't gotten a mobile interface together
41:02 but anyway I wanted to share that with you too just as another resource again sharing the love with folks around the world if you can't afford my book go go to that kringlish stuff try to see what you know what you can pull out of it you know there's tons of free resources but it's always you know if uh if i do get support back and it's it's always great um anyway um so i use a lot of organic i'm just going to call it herb for my fermented plant juice i hardly use any of it on my plants but I put a teaspoon in my coffee every morning so that is
41:40 the classic thing with natural farming is that once you really get your garden growing and you get everything happening even in my case I end up most of the time using most of my solutions for myself and um sure I go out I try to spray weekly try to get the maintenance solution out but I end up drinking fermented plant juice drinks you know I make out of guavas and lily coys and instead of buying soda I take these these things and I dilute it just to taste make the water a little bit colored with this this stuff and I drink it and man it's it's nourishing
42:23 I feel good my beer is getting longer well actually my beer doesn't seem to get any longer This is about as long as it gets. I'm not sure why it doesn't. But, you know, I don't really want it longer. It'll get tangled up in, like, my PTO or something, suck my head through it. It'd be terrible. So, anyway. So, let's see here. Hey, man. Thanks, Mark, for the brotherhood. It says it's raining in Santa Cruz. Praise be to, you know, the higher spirits of us all. and you know, God and Jesus, if you're, if you're like me and into that. Um, but man, the rain,
43:03 we need it. It balances it. I want to bring up, since you mentioned the rain, I want to bring up one thing. This is, I'm, I'm working on, um, a bunch of stuff with the chickens right now. And I just want to bring up this one fact that if you're using water from the hose that came from what Master Cho calls underground water, which it's kind of hard to translate, but I translate that as well water or fresh, like straight out of springs. There's zero oxygen content in the water. However, as that water starts to flow down and starts to flow, it gets like in a
43:39 stream water, it has 3% oxygen content. Okay. Now, the other type of water you have is rainwater. rainwater the reason plants don't just die when it continually rains and they don't drown is rainwater has eight percent oxygen content in it oh yeah how's that eight also eight percent oxygen content in it and so as it rains it's nourishing it's bringing oxygen down to your plant roots it's it's going and you can get it up to 16 percent oxygen content 12 12 to 16 percent if you use what they call a bacterial mineral waterfall or the vortex brewer that i put up on
44:28 my um on my youtube or actually i think it's on natural farming hawaii actually as as one of the videos that I explain how I built this thing super simply. And what it does is it raises your oxygen content really to a high degree. So just wanted to mention that since you say it's raining, it's really a good thing. It's a blessing for all of us. Oh, man, there's more comments. It just loaded a whole bunch for me. I should probably speed up on these things. Either that or I'll save for next time too but um very inspiring reading blessed to have master drake dropping
45:06 the gold on us can you tell us how to apply the knf solutions using potting containers so the the solutions are always kind of diluted out um let me see here if i have the book i don't I don't have it up right now. Let me see. I'll pull that up. But they're applied the same way as you would, you know, any of these things. There's nothing special about it. You know, watering it in, having a drip system. It's how you get it. You know, foliar feeding is also pretty darn efficient. But it's really, you know, let's see here.
45:52 I should pull this stuff up before I start getting into the whole deal here. Let's see. It's this one right here. So thanks for hanging with me. I'm sorry to kind of lag out on you guys. I appreciate you being here live, and I should probably do better prep so that I'm really ready for this. But this is probably worth waiting for. this i'm gonna go down to the application here and just switch this over and right here look you can see me in the back um but this is your guide to um to what you're doing and here it is on two pages now full screen that thing um but here's here's
46:42 a guide and and how you would apply it in a potting situation you dilute your solutions which these are the solutions which are up here on this previous page so all these different solutions become these different formulas and i'm sorry sorry to kind of go over this pretty fast but i talk about this a fair amount and then so these images here on this left side correspond to excuse me these formulas here so this one all of them have food in it all most of them have cleanser um you know medicine in fact it says it right here so i don't have to kind of go over these
47:18 things but you create these solutions based on what growth stage you're at and just watering it in um in like you would how you're watering your plant and at these dilutions it's safe to use every time you're watering or once a week and it depends on affordability um and the more you do it um the better you feel so let's have beans at every meal um but that's that's how to to do these things um in potting situation any outdoor situation doesn't really matter that much you know it's you want to bring living soil no matter where you are
47:56 um so our question for the day can you give us one or two of the best recommendations for building cold tolerance in plants okay great ice man hey thanks what's up donna donna ray and don up in alaska um cold tolerance the best thing you can do for cold tolerance is apply kf medicine okay so it's that herbal thing and you'll notice is you take it internally it'll heat you up your whole chest will heat up and it's just like you know they send like rescue dogs out with liquor in them type of thing what can happen is if you're getting a frost and you apply knf medicine to
48:41 your land to your plants they will uptake it and your neighbor will get frost damage and you won't and you'll notice your ground won't freeze over as much and i'm not promising this for like the entire winter type of thing but if you know a cold snap's coming it's like an early frost and you don't want to lose your whole crop you can put and specifically spray knf medicine diluted one to one thousand foliarly on your plants ahead of time and they will mitigate the amount of frost damage the other thing to do for cold tolerance is to put your imos out there as your imos bring
49:19 that activity and they start moving around in your soil they are creating heat that heat then starts to warm that system up and mitigate cold cold damage you know it builds up cold tolerance in your plants these are the reasons why knf and in here here you know i'm talking about i live in hawaii so i talk about hawaii but where i go and see this happening it's in korea these guys are having amazing results growing in greenhouses. Korea snows, it gets freezing. I've been there in December. It's, it's ice on the ground type of cold and, you know, Seoul, you're sliding around
49:56 on the sidewalks. It's, it's, it's that cold. So the, the, um, so the cold tolerance in the plants, um, this, this IMOs, these things, they really help. Um, so yeah, so folks, um, sorry, I'm not, keeping up on this chat in real time, even though it is, it's kind of lagging here, but I believe in the new future, some areas will be affected by volcano ash. Have you dealt with volcanic ash? If yes, how did you apply KNF principles when this happens? So volcanic ash, yes. In Hawaii, I live just about 20 miles from a volcano and it erupted. 2018,
50:42 it it set a huge amount of ash up and one of the things um you know it can it can upset your your soil ph it can bring a lot of acidic rain that's happening all these things start to happen one of the keys is to put out the IMOs you know um getting those things out there the other thing that's really effective is if you have this sudden rapid change saying like okay all of a sudden there's a bunch of ash in the air and then it lands on my plants the number one solution what do you guys think it's going to be it's the protectors they anytime there's a rapid change
51:22 in in environment the protectors are the guys you want to put out they're like your first aid workers they're going to go out and help your plant deal with this new change they're going to help bring in this this goodness um so so those are the going to be the things that um help with volcanic ash you know a lot of people recommend rinsing the the leaves off or those types of things if you can you know it depends on the size of your plantings but while you're rinsing it off spray them with uh can of solutions in there bring in the good goodness okay so um if rice is
51:59 considered a bacterial food this is shaman king asking oh hey i saw you were here last week too what's up um how is the rice able to attract fungi when it is used in the imo collection process and so what you got to realize here is that there's not a ton of fungus in your imo collection what there is is enough fungus and the little guys and they work together symbiotically with the bacteria so as this rice has direct contact with the soil then the microorganisms are able to jump in and it it's it's you know the exact science i wish i had enough time and energy
52:44 to go earn several more phds in these subjects because you can show you can take the imo and as you grow it out you can start to see this fungus with a microscope and so it is there i don't you know what's the exact materials how's it happening if it's not a fungal food how is it there you know i want to say oh it's some hand waving magic right but really what it's waiting for is someone else to go get a phd in this because it's really there you can verify it you can find it it's it's happening i i don't know the exact mechanism so i'm gonna give myself a pass and just move on
53:23 to the next question here um until someone really does that that good science to figure it out um But it's true. I can tell you in practice, it works. So, you know, if you don't know exactly how something's working, that's, you know, science versus nature. Nature or science is the study of nature. And just by doing it, you're a natural farmer and you see the results. And like they say, the proof is in the pudding or in the smoke or in the taste or in the health of your plants that you can visually see. So I don't know how it's working, but it does.
54:00 yeah suz walked behind me if you maybe saw earlier um she brought me some sweet breakfast she's such a sweetheart love her couldn't do this without her big shout out to suz um how big of the potential has knf in bioponics and what can be used and what is not so practical in the system all these solutions can be used in bioponics um you're going to have to adjust your dilution rates don't put them the same concentration as you would it's going to be less than one to a thousand less than one to five hundred or if I less I mean more more diluted I don't mean like lower the ratio
54:37 that would that would that would be more concentrated so less concentrated and you know one of the best things to start with is again the canf protectors those lactic acid bacteria as you get those in there they'll help to solubilize the other nutrients and then get into the calciums calcium phosphate those types of things and it will enhance everything you got going in your bioponic system so valerie here is involved in a few herb projects and she's looking for folks wanting to look at the soil web under the microscope i used to recommend earth fort labs
55:18 uh elaine ingham her thing she got going with a microscope i would look that up if you're wanting to get into that and find someone reputable that's trained with elaine um because those guys are the best you can also buy a microscope uh like about 500 and learn um i do have elaine's full course on on my youtube channel so if you look um it's ingham common ground 2012 and if you find that you can learn how to do it yourself um you know if it's fun to have a microscope it's fun to look through see these things and you can do your own analysis also helps you analyze any of your
55:57 solutions before you apply them to know you got the right bacterial the fungus ratios and you got the good biology growing but eventually you'll tune it in so your nose knows your tongue will tell you if your nose doesn't know and your eyes and these things and your human body can be tuned to also know what's what's happening like i talked about the other week so question here from nice glass is there a mix of cover crop that will feed egg layers that can be made into a silage sealed in five gallon buckets that can be stored for winter to cut down on feed cost yes just even
56:34 taking whatever wild grass is growing so you don't need a specific cover crop as you ensile things meaning get the lab in there to break it down you can um you can get even better results to happen um and so you don't you don't need anything specific i mean i think you know if you are looking for something specific clovers help help a lot um brings in more proteinaceous things but again once you ensile it the microbial bodies are full of protein and things and should be about a third of your chicken's diet should be this wild grass that you ensile this
57:14 way um so then shaman king was asking when using a brewer does it make any difference how big the bubbles are um you know the finer micro bubbles where the oxygen comes in is actually where it's breaking the surface on the top so these bubbles that you're bubbling up are not really that available to the microbes and to the solution what's happening is most of the oxygenation is happening on the surface as those bubbles rise and it breaks the surface tension that's why the brewer i tend to use is a vortex and as you vortex it it's making a corkscrew which is big at the top
57:54 and air is in there and then it's getting smaller and smaller and it actually sucks the air into the water and then micro micronizes and particularizes and that's why i use a vortex versus a bubbler um i use an airlift pump and it's it's outlined in my vortex brewer video so um so those are there um i got a bunch more questions but i but i really wanted to get to this question i was emailed over here because um this question that i got i think is well worth everyone's time here just and i only got a few more minutes i'll go a few minutes over here but um i got a question
58:37 on uh from julia who um helped her out with some of the um things she got going with her animal barn and getting the imos up there but she was asking what is the proper smell excuse me can i get a sneeze okay it passed um proper smell of water soluble calcium so i have a water soluble calcium here this one still has the bones in it it needs to be poured off but um but you see the color this started with white vinegar it's now this kind of um golden color and that is a sign that there are a bunch of this calcium phosphate which i call knf structure is up in the solution so um
59:22 give it a smell it smells and she says it smells like kind of like a sweet bone wine it does for sure one of the best ways to know that your calcium phosphate is done however is to taste it and i started with white vinegar and all of that vinegar is gone however it is still sour and what i wanted to show you guys is i drew this little picture for this one and what's happening to my tongue right now as i taste that is if this is my tongue and i'm sticking it out at you like this this is the tip of the tongue that's back where it's in my mouth is this side you see
1:00:06 where these bars are this is being activated in my mouth right now and it's and it's making my tongue kind of curl up. And then also in the back of my tongue, I'm getting this chalky kind of taste. This chalky taste is the calcium. And these side tastes here are the sourness of the phosphorus. So I can actually tune my tongue in to know that I have the correct thing. And the tip of my tongue, which kind of gets that vinegar bite that you'll you'll know it when you taste pure vinegar that taste it's not being activated it's um it's happening it's it's it's transition from the
1:00:50 vinegar bite to this more uh curl like my tongue wants to like curl you know go like that when you're a kid and stuff it it almost naturally wants to make your body do that okay so this is how you know there's no vinegar bite that's gone it does have a sweet kind of wine smell but also the taste is um is completely transformed and that's how you know more than anything that's why i say tune in your tongue tune in all these things tune in what you're what you're needing because once you tune your body into this you become a you know next level knf person
1:01:25 and so she has another question here about feminizing seeds with urine and i thought this was a really interesting idea she's talking about using the the urine from females right before their their ovulation so she's utilizing certain hormones that are exuded in the urine from her body to then soak the seeds in to feminize seeds. I myself am unfamiliar with that. I do know that the urine will help your seeds pop better. I do know that you can, you know, the more you include your body DNA into this, it transfers into the microbes.
1:02:11 They're very subtle. And this is kind of some hand-waving kind of hippie stuff, but there's you can do scientific experiments to find this and um and i think it's going to be a very good thing maybe maybe next week i'll get um my wife suz to talk a little bit about it um she's she's been doing a bunch of urine research especially if you let the urine age a little bit it changes to how it how it goes um it can be even even better for plants and these types of things um and so i think this is a very interesting idea there is one thing i wanted to talk about
1:02:52 when you get back to um to soaking seeds and that and that is that if you're starting in fact this just seeds in general and that is if you are using um maltose in your seeds um or spraying it on your plants, you can actually have your plant, even though it's pollinated, it can have it where it won't produce seed. So you can have the male and female together. And now this isn't, I haven't done this a hundred percent and made it work, but they are using it in grape vineyards in Korea. And so you ask, well, what is maltose? Well, it's not one of the nine core solutions,
1:03:35 but it is something that's from master cho and that he gave us as a recipe so i'm gonna switch back to this page at natural farming hawaii.net and again this this you can access by going under the recipes down here to the legacy recipes that's this page and then here you go here is the maltose recipe right here so if you want to learn more about it you want to see you want to try um to have your plants grow and not give seed mitigate the amount of seed that happens the maltose recipe applied during its it's when it's doing its changeover period so when you're starting to
1:04:12 have your plant flower applying that will mitigate the amount of seed happening so kind of an interesting side side approach to that I don't necessarily know the answer to everything um i've only you know only been alive for you know a thousand years and um not quite sure of everything but uh let me see transition this back here um so what i'm gonna do here i just i want to thank you guys for for tuning in um i'm gonna take a screenshot of the last questions i know i know sorry i didn't get to you live but you can get um while i'm at
1:04:49 I should say that you can get the screen recordings, these things played back for you at knfsupport.com, which is a website that's run by the foundation, the Pure KNF Foundation that I'm part of. And clicking right up here at the office hours, you can go and see all the past office hours, get more of the questions. also it gives you another chance here to buy my book support myself um it's just it's just a link that takes you to natural farming hawaii.net but when you click on that office hours link i'm sorry
1:05:27 it's not uh categorized and i'm working on getting table of contents if you'd like to help out with that get a nice thumbnail some table of contents what we talked about those times but definitely a work in progress building this up but it's a way that you can get uh involved find out you know what's going on what happened in the past um appreciate you guys tuning in love this live stream love the fact that we're connecting all over the world um you know trying trying to get better with my technology here to run it um definitely one man show getting that things
1:06:02 together but happy that i have the technical prowess to make this happen for you and look forward to connecting next week i'll be doing these things as far as i can tell into the into the future it's worked out great i i love connecting with folks um and i do have one more thing that's worth mentioning if you've lasted this long you are probably um super interested in korean natural farming and that is at knffarm.com and that is an ability for you to come to hawaii to learn um you know i've i've i think down here it says there's been like hundreds of
1:06:47 students oh 97 which i gotta update that number from the last class i did um had 12 classes so far a bunch of people have taken my teacher training as well and are out there doing these things but can't have farm you can go here and then register and i got a class january 10th to the 16th and february 14th to the 20th of 2022 i'll probably be posting a few more courses up as i want to accommodate more but it's it's a matter of balancing my personal life with the things I got going on the farm with everything. And, um, and I did put in some, um, uh, more
1:07:28 affordable, um, camping options. So if you're, if you're hardcore and you want to just get the info and, um, rough it, I got camping options, which are much cheaper. Then I got a special deal where if you come as a couple, you get to save a thousand dollars by staying in the same cottage with each other. And then, um, my one person cottage, you know, if you want to come solo and what you get is a complete overview of korean natural farming you get um all like basically from from zero to a hundred of you get an intro to it which and if you're
1:08:03 already familiar it's it's not like it's boring it's it's in depth um you get we do all the recipes hands-on so you are an expert when you leave it's more than just the nine core solutions We also cover Jadam and then all the practical things that I do, all the pro tips that I have going on. And then you also get a level three certification, which makes you have a teacher certification. So if you want to be teaching, you want to go out, you want to spread the word. This is a direct lineage from Master Cho through myself, working with my foundation as a certification body
