Fish Amino Acid vs Hydrolysate, IMO Heat, Seed Soak Storage

Drake opens with the I Ching hexagram on nourishment, then explains why fish amino acid (FAA), made from raw fish heads, sugar, and lactic acid bacteria, stays different from store-bought fish hydrolysate: grinding fish generates heat that denatures the amino acids, while KNF fermentation keeps breaking them into simpler forms the longer it sits. He covers moon-phase timing for IMO collection, full moon and the days after are best, and for gathering fermented plant juice right after the full moon during the Hawaiian la'au days, and answers a question on using KNF in aquaculture and aquaponics to cut antibiotic use.

On seed soak solution: diluted mixes only keep 3-5 days, up to a week refrigerated, while concentrated premixes of the nine core solutions, like maintenance solution at two parts food, two parts cleanser, one part structure, one part medicine, can store 1-3 months. He walks through his own routine: one liter of maintenance covers a 40-gallon tank, mixed monthly in half-gallon batches, dosed at 25 ml per gallon.

Later questions cover charring bones for KNF structure, stack two grill starters so flames run straight through, Pedigree dog food for IMO3, why powdered OHN ingredients turn to sludge, pineapple stems and bromelain speeding fish amino breakdown, soaking dead wood in seawater or 30 g/L salt water before using it in hugelkultur, and winter prep: mulch, then spray maintenance solution or Jadam microbe solution before the ground freezes. He closes on IMO pile height, 6 inches unattended, 12-16 inches if he can turn it, and reading forest and bakery smells as the real sign of a good IMO4 pile, rather than a big surface bloom.

Questions answered

  • 7:13 Is FAA (fish amino acid) the same as fish hydrolysate? — No, FAA ferments raw fish with sugar and lactic acid bacteria without heat, keeping amino acids simple, while commercial hydrolysate is often ground hot enough to denature the proteins.
  • 15:50 Does the moon cycle affect the IMO making process? — Yes, full moon and the days right after are the best time to start IMOs, and Drake built a moon-phase app to track it.
  • 20:23 Can KNF solutions and principles be applied to aquaculture? — Yes, lactobacillus and KNF foods improve water quality and cut antibiotic use in fish farms, applied at a lighter dilution since the fish are already in water.
  • 23:31 Can seed soak solution be stored long term with FAA and LAB added? — Diluted solution only lasts 3-5 days, up to a week refrigerated, but concentrated premixes can store 1-3 months.
  • 29:13 How to use LAB (protectors) and banana FFJ (food) halfway through flowering? — Keep using LAB as protection the whole grow cycle, and use banana KNF food as a fruit-stage food that adds potassium as flowers firm up.
  • 40:27 Tips on charring bones for KNF structure? — Stack two grill starters, wood burning in the bottom one and bones in the top one, so flames run straight through and char evenly.
  • 49:44 What dog food brand works for IMO3? — Pedigree, cheap and available, since the lactic acid bacteria purge out any toxins in the food anyway.
  • 50:35 Can powdered ingredients like licorice or angelica be used for OHN? — No, powders are too hard to sieve and turn into sludge, so use chipped or fresh bark instead.
  • 51:48 Do pineapple stems help break down fish amino acid or KNF structure? — Yes, bromelain (and papaya) speeds breakdown, especially in cooler weather, though longer fermentation still gives simpler aminos.
  • 52:57 Is a dying plum tree trunk okay for a hugelkultur bed, or allopathic? — Add lactobacillus or IMO to purge bad microbes first, or soak the wood in seawater or 30 grams per liter salt water for about a week.
  • 54:30 Would ambient temperature matter when making IMO3? — Yes, his temperature-probe test showed about a 20-degree gap between air temperature and pile temperature, tracking together.
  • 55:53 What should I do to prepare my ground for winter? — Mulch with straw, then spray liquid IMO, lactobacillus, and maintenance solution, or make Jadam microbe solution if short on time.
  • 58:52 If my IMO2 was made when it was warmer, will it still work for IMO3 in cold weather? — Yes, if the IMO2 is under a year or two old it will still activate fine.
  • 1:01:55 My IMO4 needs FAA to heat up and shows lots of white mycelium and forest smell, is it still good? — Likely yes, a forest and bakery smell is the real sign of quality, not a big surface bloom, which often signals actinomycetes instead.
  • 1:03:48 How tall should an IMO pile be? — About 6 inches if left unattended overnight, 12-16 inches if he can turn it, spread to about 4 inches if it starts overheating.
