JADAM Origins, Soap Wetting Agent, and Sulfur Pesticide Claims

Drake spends the hour going through JADAM's official "About" page line by line, checking founder Young Sang Cho's claims against what he saw visiting JADAM's farm and education center in Daejeon, South Korea with Dr. Park. Cho says he founded JADAM in 1991, but Drake looks up the jadam.kr domain on WHOIS and finds it was only registered September 22, 2013, and notes Cho rarely credits his father, Master Cho, for the earlier work.

Drake questions two of Cho's "inventions." The natural wetting agent is soap, and Dr. Bronner's has sold nearly the same liquid soap recipe since 1973. The sulfur pesticide's real innovation, Drake says, was making it with sodium hydroxide (lye) instead of the old method of heating sulfur in drums. He also runs the word "JADAM" through Google Translate; it isn't an acronym, it just means "people who resemble nature," or informally, hippies.

He works through JADAM's list of claimed natural pesticides: for canker and leaf spot, powdery and downy mildew, aphids and mites, stink bugs and mealybugs, slugs and snails, rice water weevil, and flies in livestock housing, mostly built from soap, sulfur, and lactobacillus. Drake also questions the site's claim of 75,000 members and its argument that agrochemical corporations are the main reason farming is collapsing, saying land value and tourism competition hurt Hawaiʻi farmers like him more directly.

The episode closes with photos from Drake's visit to JADAM's education center and old organic farm near Daejeon: a wall of roughly 2,000 donor names, a "natural pesticides only" discussion table, and the composting toilet Drake used himself. He plugs Pure KNF membership at pureknf.org and mentions an upcoming March membership meeting.

Questions answered

  • 10:07 Who founded JADAM and when did the brand actually start? — Cho says 1991, but Drake checks WHOIS and finds jadam.kr was only registered September 22, 2013.
  • 17:22 Why should farmers bother learning ultra-low-cost JADAM methods? — They're simple and cheap enough to keep making fertilizer even if supply chains or money fail, so Drake tells everyone to learn them.
  • 32:15 Are JADAM's home-made pesticides as effective as commercial ones? — Drake says they're less concentrated and slower-acting, like coca leaf versus cocaine, but better for the bigger picture.
  • 23:48 Are agrochemical corporations really why farming is collapsing? — Drake disagrees, saying in Hawaiʻi land value and tourism competition hurt him more than any corporation.
  • 33:38 Is JADAM patented? — No, Drake explains you can't patent a natural process, though the JADAM name itself can be trademarked.
  • 48:19 Did Young Sang Cho really invent the soap wetting agent? — Drake points out Dr. Bronner's has sold nearly the same soap recipe since 1973, decades before JADAM.
  • 42:16 What does the word JADAM actually mean? — It's not an acronym; Google Translate and Ray both told Drake it just means people who resemble nature, or hippies.
  • 50:34 What pest and disease problems does JADAM claim to solve? — The site lists canker, leaf spot, powdery and downy mildew, aphids, mites, stink bugs, mealybugs, slugs, snails, and rice pests, mostly with soap and sulfur mixes.
  • 56:50 What did Drake see at the JADAM Education Center in Daejeon? — A wall with about 2,000 donor names, a broadcast room, and a table reserved only for discussing natural pesticides.
  • 1:03:41 What's notable about the composting toilet at JADAM's old farm? — Drake used it himself and jokes that some of the farm's fertility came from his own contribution.
  • 44:38 Why does Drake keep bringing up Master Cho, Young Sang's father? — Drake says Young Sang rarely mentions his father in JADAM's official history, even though core methods trace back to him.
