Biochar Retort Build, Food Canoe Raised Beds, Charging Char

Drake opens with the I Ching hexagram on family and clan, then catches up with the Pure KNF chat community before diving into two builds: a homemade biochar retort and the food canoe raised-bed project.

He built his own 30-gallon inner drum from a cut-down larger drum, nested it inside a 55-gallon outer drum, and packs it with wood. The outer wood burns to char the inner load, venting pyrolysis gas through a chimney — a retort method he learned years ago and finally built this week. He points viewers to his interview with biochar expert Josiah Hunt and explains that char needs a second burn, a hot compost cycle around 120°F, to fully charge it with microbes and fungi.

The food canoe project gets a full walkthrough: two-by-four frames wrapped in iron roofing, about $200 to build and fill with soil, growing potatoes, kale, basil, beets, onions, tomatoes, and daikon over an eight-week timelapse. Drake compares raised beds to native-soil planting — better microbial interaction in the ground, but easier weeding and urban-friendly at raised height.

Questions from chat cover charging biochar for specific crops with nitrogen, using the lemon ferment diluted on non-citrus plants, daikon fermentation, mint's low-light tolerance as a border plant, and loading char straight into a thermophilic compost pile to inoculate it. The stream cuts out around the 38-minute mark before the Master Cho segment.

Questions answered

  • 10:31 How do you build a DIY biochar retort from oil drums? — Drake welded a 30-gallon drum to nest inside a 55-gallon drum, packed the inner one with wood, and burned the outer wood to char it, venting through a chimney.
  • 17:58 What is the food canoe project and what does it cost? — It's a raised bed made from two-by-fours and iron roofing, roughly $200 to build and fill, growing potatoes, kale, basil, and tomatoes.
  • 24:30 Is there a best way to load biochar up with microbes? — Yes — soak it in nutrients like fish amino acid or plant juice, or inoculate it in a compost pile.
  • 26:41 Why does biochar need to be burned more than once? — You burn the wood to get charcoal, then let it go through a hot compost burn around 120°F so microbes and fungi charge the char.
  • 29:31 Can biochar be loaded for specific crops? — Yes, you can charge it with nitrogen or other nutrients targeted to the crop you're growing.
  • 30:52 Is it better to plant in raised beds or straight into native soil? — Native soil gives more microbial interaction, but raised beds are easier on your back, keep out weeds, and work in urban spots.
  • 33:11 How do you prepare daikon? — Drake isn't a fan of raw daikon but likes it pickled or fermented, especially with jalapeño.
  • 33:11 Does mint need strong grow lights indoors? — No — mint grows like a weed even in low light and makes a great ground cover or border plant with lemongrass and comfrey.
  • 35:26 Can the lemon plant-juice ferment be used on any plant? — Yes, just dilute it more; it's best on citrus, and the citric acid can burn other plants if too strong.
  • 36:41 Does loading char into a late thermophilic compost pile work? — Yes — soak the char in water and nutrients first, then add it to the pile so microbes climb in and charge it up.
