Chick Waterer Pipe Sizes, Long Intestines, ATV Sprayers

Drake opens with the I Ching hexagram for Deliverance: change your attitude, forgive, and let progress unfold on its own. Then it's back to Master Cho's chicken series with Mr. Lee in Gokseung, where two-day-old meat chicks have already doubled in size inside a raised, ventilated brooder with a heater, a thermometer, a wing-shaped flap over the entrance, and netting in the corners to stop chicks from getting stuck.

Mr. Lee processes a batch of roosters with a quail plucker, and the group eats the whole bird, including the intestines. Fed rice, egg, and bamboo for their first days, the birds' intestines stretch to about three meters long, far longer than normal, which Drake says lets them pull much more energy out of their feed.

Waterer pipes get sized to the birds' age: 30mm for the smallest chicks, 35mm and 50mm as they grow, and 100mm for full-size layers and broilers. Chicks are seen pecking at bare dirt for minerals, another argument for raising them on soil instead of concrete, and Mr. Lee keeps expanding the pen by about a meter at a time so the flock sizes up evenly instead of some birds growing big while others stay small.

Between segments, Drake price-checks ATV and boom sprayers at Tractor Supply and Ag Spares, landing on a roughly 80-dollar, 15-gallon tank with a 12-volt pump as the best value for towing behind a hand cart, and notes ducks can be raised the same way as chickens but make a much messier pen.
