Chicken Feed with IMO4 and LAB, Molasses in Compost Tea

Drake opens with an I Ching reading on influence, then talks about staying authentic versus content-creator influencers. He revisits last week's theme that farming is a form of war, plus a stoic trick: treat life as sorrow by default so any good day counts as a win.

Farm news: his wife Susanna finally built a good-smelling IMO pile on her third try and is spreading it on a corn research plot. He then reviews a Muju training video where Master Cho's group make chicken feed by mixing IMO4, yeast, seawater, and lactobacillus (LAB) into manure until it smells good and turns into a vitamin-rich feed.

A missionary in the group describes his hardest challenge doing KNF in the Philippines: his purpose was ministry, not farming, so teaching basic chicken-pen setup got lost in translation. Drake ties this to his own motivation for KNF, farming to protect the ocean rather than out of love for growing food, and credits Master Lee's hands-on failures for teaching him more about IMO than Master Cho's theory.

One live question: does molasses in compost tea feed the wrong bacteria? Drake says yes, molasses mainly feeds bacteria, so a fungal-dominant tea needs ground oats or potato instead, or you'll get a bacterial bloom.

Questions answered

  • 18:06 How long does it take to get a good IMO pile going? — Drake's wife failed three times before making one on her own that smelled great.
  • 22:32 How is chicken feed made from scratch at the Muju farm? — They mix IMO4, yeast, seawater, and lactobacillus (LAB) into manure until it smells good and becomes vitamin-rich feed.
  • 25:38 What was hardest about teaching KNF chicken farming in the Philippines? — His purpose was mission work, not farming, so explaining a chicken pen got lost across the language and motivation gap.
  • 27:38 Why does Drake say his real motivation for KNF is the ocean, not farming itself? — All the runoff from land ends up in the ocean, so restoring soil is really about saving the ocean he grew up next to.
  • 34:15 Why does Drake say Master Lee taught him more about IMO than Master Cho? — Master Cho explains IMO in theory, but Master Lee has failed at it repeatedly and shows the practical setup that actually works.
  • 37:54 What do Hawaii KNF farmers say about setting up a chicken feed system? — It's a lot of work up front, but a properly set up pen and feed system takes you from okay to expert.
  • 40:17 Does molasses in compost tea feed the wrong bacteria and crowd out the good ones? — Yes for fungal tea, molasses mainly feeds bacteria, so use ground oats or potato instead or you get a bacterial bloom.
