Fermented Chicken Feed, IMO4, and Seawater
Drake walks through his own chicken feed ferment: roughly a third to just under half of the birds' diet comes from fermented pellets and scratch grain, with the rest made up of IMO4, fresh greens, and recycled kitchen scraps. His base recipe is half pellets, half scratch grain in a 5-gallon bucket, with a heaping handful of IMO4 and 1 to 2 ounces of maintenance solution added, mixed with water or milk and left to ferment 24 hours before fresh-cut greens go in.
The main green is laupele (tree spinach, also called Pacific bell or edible hibiscus), along with tea leaves and bananas. Chickens also get bread and the leftover curds skimmed off when Drake makes lactobacillus serum. He compares his simple setup to Dr. Park's commercial operation, which ferments chicken feed in multiple stages with manure, IMOs, yeasts, seawater, and minerals over several days — Drake notes he used to add seawater to his own feed and stopped, mostly from the hassle of hauling it to the barn.
On fermentation timing, Drake says open-air batches should ferment about 4 to 5 days, be fed out over roughly the next three days, and not be kept past about ten days to two weeks unless ensiled. Dr. Park's feed is usually ready after 3 to 4 days and stays feedable up to about 5 days. The video tour also covers Dr. Park's chicken housing: around 200 birds total, plus additional pens of about 130 each (120 hens and 10 roosters per pen).
Questions answered
- 2:21 What feed mixes does Drake use for chickens, pigs, and cows? — About a third to just under half of the diet comes from fermented pellets, scratch grain, and recycled fermented feed, plus a lot of IMO4.
- 4:43 What's the recipe for a basic fermented chicken feed? — Half pellets and half scratch grain in a 5-gallon bucket, a heaping handful of IMO4, 1-2 oz of maintenance solution, water or milk, fermented 24 hours, then mixed with fresh sickled greens.
- 5:29 What greens does Drake feed his chickens? — Mainly laupele, also called tree spinach, Pacific bell, or edible hibiscus, plus tea leaves and bananas.
- 6:14 What else goes into the chicken diet besides greens and fermented grain? — Bread, and the leftover curds from making lactobacillus serum, which the chickens go wild for.
- 7:37 How does Dr. Park's commercial chicken feed ferment compare to Drake's home batch? — Dr. Park ferments in multiple stages with manure, IMOs, yeasts, seawater, and minerals over several days, producing a much more developed, good-smelling feed than Drake's simpler 24-hour ferment.
- 8:19 Does Drake still add seawater to his chicken feed? — He used to but has stopped, mainly because of the hassle of hauling seawater up to the barn, and says he should start again.
- 10:32 How long should fermented feed be fermented and fed before it goes bad? — Ferment about 4-5 days in open air, feed it over the next roughly three days, and don't push it past about ten days to two weeks unless it's been ensiled.
- 12:03 How many days does Dr. Park's fermented feed need before it can be fed to pigs? — It's usually ready after three to four days and can still be fed up to about five days.
- 13:34 How many chickens does Dr. Park's operation run, and how are they housed? — About 200 chickens total, with additional pens holding roughly 130 birds each, 120 hens and 10 roosters per pen.

0:00 well here we go after oh let's see if this stream even goes technical difficulties it's always hard doing things like everyone's there like it dies yeah you're back hey stone man it's wild man trying to run this thing going while I'm trying to do this and then doing all these things
0:46 this okay here we go okay
1:35 yeah so yeah anyway I don't think wild wild yeah hey how's it that's some different people in here now hey Brazil in the house go hang out with Pedro hey yeah hey goof come back that's what happens when you take your computer to a LAN party bro is uh come back and think I won't even recognize the monitors wild all right so anyway um jumping into this let's see we were doing this we made IMOs we did all these things doing stuff you know
2:21 and one of the things I was talking about is um what feed mixes do I use at my farm for the chickens pigs cows um chickens I'm doing a fermentation of uh not uh like a handful I'm basically doing a 24 hour ferment I'm not doing the same type of ferment that he's doing I just I don't have enough time to do it and if I was doing it it would probably be better and to put more of the um manure in there my fermentation process do I have a chicken feed let me just see channel do I I know
3:13 yeah here basically this formula I don't know I'm actually so what I do is more along the lines of this one here Kim Chang's video um where we feed them greens we're feeding them the scratch feeding them pellet but all those have been fermented so mine only about a third of my feed is coming from and compost I guess so about about a third to a little bit more maybe less than half their feed is coming stuff I'm recycling I'm not fermenting the manures
3:58 and but some a lot of their diet is IMO4 I know someone the other day was asking me I don't know I don't know since I got married and stuff I just don't film things and my wife doesn't really like being on camera and um I don't know I just don't film what I'm doing anymore but um yeah I've been uh so take chicken so take chicken food you know the pellets that you would buy like two more pellets some scratch grains mix those about half half in the in a five
4:43 gallon bucket throw in a heaping um handful of IMO4 into it and add a whole thing a maintenance solution to it not a whole thing I mean like um probably a good two ounces ounce to two ounce and then I add water to that or milk and I let that then sit in the bucket and ferment for 24 hours I go and grab or my wife usually does it but grabs a bunch of fresh greens we sickle those just growing grasses and they really like the LA plant see if I um yeah this right here so um I use a
5:29 lot of this plant which is a um it's a shrub spinach it's a tree spinach feed my my chickens they love this plant um laupele call it pacific bell edible hibiscus is another name for it this and and also some tea leaves sometimes bananas um yeah they'll they'll eat they love this like leafy green type of thing um and uh yeah so feed them all that that's what I do oh cool you know pedro cool he's a great guy good okay um so that's what I've been doing I haven't you know I
6:14 haven't incorporated much silage and all that kind of stuff I do feed them breads and um a lot of actually they love curds so um I will when I'm making lactobacillus or I get a lot of milk and I turn it into lactobacillus um I feed them the curds they love the curds they go wild for the curds so um so the chickens get all kinds of good stuff it's not really a consistent diet nor is it like a fermented like we're showing here but um this idea of oh there oh um so yeah so going over this whole thing of the
6:59 chicken feeds I mean this way he's doing it with these big mixers and stuff I just don't have this kind of mixing stuff at my place you know and I'm not doing I'm not you know we're raising 50 40 to 50 chickens right now and so if I was doing 200 I might do more of this um but basically it's like they're not even needing a five gallon bucket so you know and he's he's feeding his chickens he's feeding 200 chickens four five gallon buckets so I'm like feeding half a five gallon bucket but also my greens aren't in there so in total I'm probably feeding him three quarters of a five gallon bucket
7:35 of stuff it's hard because I don't compress the greens down um but uh yeah so anyway interesting to see I you know if I had gone through this process and made all this ferment and then where he puts the ferment let's go over here where we were you know putting the fermented stuff into this type of extra thing like let me tell you like when when we were there and he was bringing this stuff out of here this stuff the chicken food that he had made with the manure the IMOs all the yeasts everything that he had made here his mixture the seawater the minerals I'm not even I used to be
8:17 putting seawater in my chicken's food and I'm not even doing that anymore but I should be should be it's just a matter of getting the seawater up to the barn so I can mix it in but this chicken food that he was feeding his chickens here when we go ahead and we smelled this we just we smelled this stuff it smelled so darn good it was just like you know you would eat it type thing and it's not to say that my chicken food doesn't smell good but I'm not fermenting it for as long as he is where he's done multiple fermentation stages and then letting this ferment here for a couple like three days
8:56 here before then he's mixing it out like this stuff was like another level goodness of what he's doing and I just you know it's hard to do all this stuff to put it all together I mean it's the fire right the burning fire you gotta stick to what you can do cling to the fire I mean I could I could do all this but man if I just dedicated myself to all natural farming and tried to not do anything else maybe I could do this I don't know it's also it's also about resources you know like time energy money it's cheaper to have the stuff I don't know anyway one day I you
9:42 know I aspire to be like this guy one day a lot to balance you know get a claim to the fire of goodness and also aspire to be like the fire need a bigger so anyway this is where we were we did this going through I think we were right at the four hour mark listening to Dr. Park talk about this listening to the feeds and then we were going to head over hanging out with the pigs so he's feeding one bucket between this pig and those two pigs of this stuff right here
10:27 yeah I got super good smell on this stuff it's amazing yeah so the fermentation does you can over ferment things although if you ensyle them you wouldn't over ferment it but in this open air fermentation you know four or five days fermentation and then he's feeding it for the next three days but just don't go beyond ten maybe two weeks probably is safer you know you can't just like have this stuff indefinitely made unless you
11:12 ensiled it again which perhaps you could but that might affect the rest of the microbes in there I think an aerobic fermentation for this is better but you know when you're doing farming look at this though look at this rack he has or can you not see what I'm doing oh no doesn't zoom in for you guys why it's screen recording the entire screen that's what man anyway but look at this rack back here tool rack you know this is the kind of efficiency you need when you're doing this full time you gotta have nice tools hung up well place for everything awesome oh it's a double
12:00 getting you guys let me turn this off it's screen capturing it's all broken down that it's so loud for me man I gotta get this configuration going yeah okay echo gone yeah okay it was double doing your thing and it's it was oh man it's so loud for me I wish I could turn down my internal feedback I'm just getting blasted by this Chinese guy right now how many days in this five days up to five but you can feed it immediately
12:46 no no you have to ferment how many three usually about three four days generally you can use after three days and you can feed up to five days okay okay makes sense I'll turn this volume down for myself and I can't monitor it as well but whatever it smells good not bad so he's doing all his chickens these are the tinier little ones I think he was going to do these into meat birds
13:31 I don't know maybe they're not they're all egg layers but he has so in addition to the 200 chickens he has behind the feed mixing thing he has one two three more pens here so each of these has 120 hens in it or yeah and then 10 roosters so there's 130 chickens per pen that he has and so these ones are like teenagers he's going to feed them here he's feeding them grass first he's feeding he's feeding them he's feeding them he's feeding 26 he's feeding he's feeding him he's feeding he's feeding him yeah look at his left ear look at his left ear he's feeding he's feeding him he's feeding his leg
14:12 and his left ear how do you he's feeding him he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding he's feeding yeah well the
15:00 the volume is coming through my audio mixer but it's coming back it usually isn't this loud for me but i messed something up you know it's when you take your computer apart and then put it together like five minutes before the thing starts and it's not working obviously like it's so loud for me i mean i turned it down on it now i can't really hear my own anyway it doesn't matter i don't even need a monitor i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't i can't
