Liquid IMO Vortex Brewer, IMO4 vs IMO5, No-Till Cover Crops

Drake opens from Hilo honoring Master Cho, who passed recently, sharing photos from the first 2011 Makapala training and the 2017 advanced course. He talks about teaching neighbors growing kava: instead of the meticulous IMO3/4 process, he had them build a vortex brewer, mixing seed IMO to make five gallons of microbial tea, diluted 1:10 to 1:20 and watered onto the fields. A video on how he built his own vortex brewer is for sale at naturalfarminghawaii.net.

The second half replays archive footage of Master Cho and Master Lee at a chicken and IMO seminar in Muju, Korea. Drake explains IMO4 is for building soil foundation microbes, while IMO5 (fermented mixed compost made by adding manure) is better used later, once plants are growing, applied as a light dusting rather than a precise weight. Master Cho demonstrates no-till rye cover cropping, chopped and dropped rather than tilled in, and argues it multiplies nutrients rather than stealing them, even as government ag officers insisted his fields needed tilling.

Drake explains why he uses corn less than Master Cho does, favoring sugarcane and banana in Hawaii's tropics. Master Cho also corrects chicken feeder placement so hens can walk straight to water. The episode ends with a green onion quiz comparing a naturally farmed onion to a chemically fertilized one side by side, judged by root strength and shape.

Questions answered

  • 9:42 How do you fix acidic land without buying lime? — Master Cho told a rancher to haul seawater and spray it diluted about 1 to 30 onto the land to remineralize and alkalize it cheaply.
  • 27:59 How do you teach IMO to total beginners without IMO3/4 mistakes? — Drake had his neighbors build a vortex brewer, mix seed IMO into a tea, then dilute it 1:10 to 1:20 and water it onto their kava.
  • 31:33 Where can I learn to build a vortex brewer for liquid IMO? — Drake sells a video on naturalfarminghawaii.net showing the build, the pump, and how he runs it.
  • 38:20 What's the difference between IMO4 and IMO5? — IMO4 is the foundation microbes for building soil; IMO5, fermented mixed compost with manure added, is better for feeding plants once they're already growing.
  • 43:01 Did Master Cho apply IMO5 at the same rate as IMO4? — Roughly the same light dusting, not a precise weight, though Drake mentioned about 1300 pounds per quarter to half acre as a rough reference.
  • 45:30 Does a rye cover crop steal nutrients from the main crop? — No, Drake says a living rye cover crop brings in more sunlight and microbial energy and multiplies nutrients instead of stealing them.
  • 48:25 Why doesn't Drake grow corn the way Master Cho recommends? — Corn has never done well for Drake in Hawaii's acidic soil, so he leans on sugarcane and banana as his fast-growing cover crops instead.
  • 50:57 Government ag officers said the field needs tilling to grow well — what happened? — Master Cho's no-till field grew anyway because the worms, gophers, and moles did the tilling instead of a machine.
  • 55:19 What did Master Cho correct about the chicken feeder layout? — The feeders were facing the wrong direction, blocking hens from walking straight to their water, so he had them turned the other way.
  • 56:08 Can you tell which green onion is naturally farmed just by looking? — The natural farmed one had straighter, thicker roots reaching outward, while the chemically fed one looked bigger on top but more emaciated.
