Ethanol or any denatured alcohol for OHN

Hi everyone, I'm starting to prepare OHN and I was wondering if any denatued alcohol (90% or 96%) can be used while making OHN. I can get this sort of alcohol easily and way cheaper than vodka, whisky or other commercially available alcohols. Thanks

From the KNF library

From the KNF library Drafted by Claude from Office Hours and the books · Sep 2026 · 5 sources

Drake says OHN needs alcohol above 35%, because it drives the compounds into the cell. (Office Hours Ep. 12, 1:07:17) He says any hard alcohol over 35% works, and to avoid something as strong as Everclear. (Office Hours Ep. 51, 26:05)

The sources differ on the range. Cho's literature calls for 35% alcohol or higher. (Office Hours Ep. 13, 26:15) The brewing steps say to top the jar with 30-35% alcohol. (Office Hours Ep. 60, 29:24)

The Student's Manual fills the jars with vodka or other alcohol. (Student's Manual, Basic Course, p. 25)

The library does not cover denatured alcohol. It also says nothing about diluting 90% or 96% spirit down to this range.

Thanks for your answer. I didn’t like much the idea of using this kind of alcohol, but I thought maybe someone was already using it successfully. About the % of alcohol, that wasn’t a problem, if it was an acceptable solution, I would’ve diluted it to get 35/40%.
